MASP Motherlode Adult Swim Program at CHS ~ by Tammy Beilstein
San Andreas, CA....There was a lot of activity Tuesday evening in the Calaveras High School swimming pool and the commotion was NOT caused by a rowdy group of kids! No… This was all the work of the MASP. The Motherlode Adult Swim Program (MASP) is a course designed to help adults improve their fitness level by providing a low impact form of exercising that is healthy on the swimmer's back and joints.....

Coached by sisters Leanne Sparvel and Michelle Pogue, the program currently has 20 members whose ages range from 18 years - "until you cannot swim any longer". As of today, the most senior member is a lively 68 years old.
One of my first observations of this group was how friendly, welcoming, and full of camaraderie they are. Some even suggested I grab a suit and join them! I informed everyone that it has been YEARS since I wore a bathing suit in public but MASP member Mike Brown compassionately said, “No one here is judgmental, Tammy. You will never find a more accepting group of people.” I believe him 100%.
MASP members swim together 3 times per week: Tuesdays and Thursdays from 6-7pm, and Saturday mornings from 8:30-9:30am. All sessions are held at the beautiful and newly renovated Calaveras High School swimming pool.
The cost per swimmer is $35.00 per month but the first session is always free of charge. For those who would like to participate in the program but not commit to the monthly fee, the drop in rate is $10.00.
As I was leaving, Coach Leann Sparvel reiterated, “Everyone is welcome here. We don’t care how beautiful someone is – how much cellulite is on the thighs – or how long it’s been since they were last in a swimsuit. We hope you join us…”
