Digital Mammography Project Construction Begins
San Andreas, CA...As a continuation of Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital’s ongoing strategy to provide the best available health care, construction began September 27, 2009 in preparation for the installation of a new digital mammography system on the hospital campus in San Andreas. The 3-phase construction project is scheduled to be completed in the first quarter of 2010. This new digital technology, not currently available in Calaveras County, is a system in which x-ray film is replaced by solid-state detectors that convert x-rays into electric signals similar to those found in digital cameras. In addition to creating a clearer image, digital mammography allows radiologists to manipulate the mammogram to electronically magnify an area, change contrast or alter the brightness. The entire Digital Mammography Project, estimated at $834,000, is being funded by the Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital Foundation whose mission is to assist the hospital by garnering financial support to help the community live healthier, happier and more productive lives.
Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is a not-for-profit, 48-bed general acute care hospital serving all of Calaveras County. Established in 1951 as Mark Twain District Hospital and centrally located in San Andreas, the hospital is partnered with Catholic Healthcare West to further strengthen this rural hospital to meet future community needs. The hospital is supported by 31 active physicians practicing in 24 specialties.
