Novel H1N1 Flu Virus Precautions~by Larry Cornish

San Andreas, CA...To help reduce the spread of the Novel H1N1 flu virus (Swine Flu) and all respiratory illnesses in Calaveras County, Mark Twain St. Joseph’s Hospital is immediately implementing restrictions on visiting hours...

o It is recommended that children 12 years of age and under refrain from visiting patients due to possible exposure to illness.

o If you are ill and have a fever, cough, diarrhea, rash, sore throat or runny nose, we ask that you please refrain from visiting patients to prevent exposure to other illnesses. You may write a note and we will be sure to deliver it to your loved one.

o If you do visit, we ask that you wash or gel your hands before and after entering a patient's room. Washing stations and antibacterial gel are available for your use. Hospital staff may also ask that you wear a mask or gown.

“Preventing flu from striking hospitalized patients is critical as they tend to be at high risk for more serious complications” said Dean Kelaita, MD, chairman of the hospital’s Infection Control Committee. “There are many ways you can help to stop the spread of the flu this season. Consider having your entire family vaccinated against the seasonal flu. The H1N1 flu shot is especially important for children and young adults this flu season also. In the event you or your children do become ill, it is important to stay home until you have completely recovered.”

Proper hand washing is also key, be sure to:
o Run your hands under warm water and apply soap.
o Lather the soap together and continue to scrub your hands for 15 to 20 seconds - this is about the same amount of time it would take you to sing "Happy Birthday" twice.
o Rinse your hands thoroughly and try not to touch the faucet when you turn off the water.
o Don't forget to clean under your fingernails!
For more information on the Novel H1N1 flu virus, please visit the CDC website at http://www.cdc.gov/swineflu/key_facts.htm or call 1-800-CDC-INFO.
