Calaveras County H1N1 Vaccine Clinic November 21, 2009, in Angels Camp

San Andreas, CA...The first community clinic to provide H1N1 flu (swine flu) vaccine will be held in Calaveras County on Saturday, November 21 from 9 am – 1 pm at Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp. The Calaveras County Public Health Department will offer the H1N1 flu vaccine to persons who are at higher risk of serious illness from the H1N1 flu. County health officials stated that delays in vaccine delivery mean that the vaccine needs to be prioritized...

The federal Centers for Disease Control (CDC) recommends that the following persons be “first in line” for the vaccine:

 Pregnant women:

Pregnant women are having high rates of serious illness and hospitalization
from the new H1N1 flu.

 Persons 6 months – 24 years of age:

Children and young adults have the highest rates of H1N1 flu and children
under 1 year of age have very high rates of hospitalization.

 Persons 25-64 years who have medical conditions that put them at higher risk for
complications:

This includes persons with respiratory problems (including asthma), heart or
kidney conditions, a weakened immune system, diabetes, neurological or
neuromuscular conditions. Having an underlying medical condition is the
greatest risk factor for flu complications, including death.

 Persons who live with or care for an infant under 6 months old:

Infants under 6 months of age cannot receive flu vaccine. Vaccinating
household members and caregivers protects the baby from getting flu.

Health care workers and emergency medical personnel who provide patient assessment are also in the CDC target groups for the initial swine flu vaccine supply. These personnel are at highest risk of exposure and can spread the flu to high risk patients if they become ill. They are also needed to provide health care to people who become seriously ill with the flu.

Vaccine will be prioritized for Calaveras County residents at the November 21 clinic.

The Public Health Department will be asking the public what target group they are in to help assure first protection of high risk residents. “We are asking our community to put our most vulnerable residents first in receiving vaccine at this clinic,” stated Dr. Dean Kelaita, County Health Officer.

H1N1 vaccine is expected to become more widely available late in November or during December. Information on additional clinics will be published in local newspapers.

The Public Health Department has been offering the H1N1 flu vaccine at local schools. Over 1400 students at the schools have been vaccinated as of November 10 in partnership with local school districts. The school clinics continue through November 16.

The H1N1 vaccine has also been distributed to several local medical providers for their personnel and patients.

As of November 6, California had 4800 confirmed hospitalized cases of the H1N1 influenza with 266 deaths. Calaveras County has reported nine known cases with three hospitalizations. There have been no deaths from the H1N1 flu to date in Calaveras County.

“While we cannot predict the course of the H1N1 flu, it has the potential to make large numbers of people sick through the fall and winter months,” Dr. Kelaita warned. “If you are in a risk group, make plans to receive the H1N1 vaccine,” Kelaita recommended.

Federal health officials estimate that up to 25% of the population could become ill with the H1N1 flu this year.

The Public Health Department has issued recommendations to prevent getting the flu or spreading it.

 If you become sick with fever and cough or sore throat stay home until 24 hours after fever is gone without use of fever reducing medicine:

 Cover your cough with a tissue, sleeve or bend of your elbow

 Wash your hands frequently or use hand sanitizer containing alcohol
