Open Letter to Alpine County Board of Supervisors~by The Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce
December 10, 2009, Board of Supervisors, Alpine County. Re: Bear Valley Development Project....The communities of Calaveras County are all very dependent on businesses like Bear Valley that generate tourist business. There are only a handful of businesses that attract large amounts of tourists to this area year-round, and Bear Valley has the potential to have the biggest impact of all. As you can imagine, the guests that Bear Valley bring to the area create revenue opportunities in Calaveras County for lodging, dining, real estate, retail, and other tourist destinations. As the .....
EIR states, Calaveras will realize nearly 80% of the financial benefit from this project. It is therefore very frustrating when our own government entities stand in the way of a key economic boost for Calaveras County.
On behalf of the Calaveras Chamber of Commerce, we encourage you to move this project forward and not delay it any further with upfront fees that would impede a good project from going through.
We believe such action would be very shortsighted. And, such action would not recognize that developments like the Bear Valley project will invigorate Calaveras County at a time when the area and the state are in need of good development projects with a strong investment team behind it.
Retail businesses and construction businesses in Calaveras County area are hurting. We have a number of struggling business and higher unemployment. We strongly anticipate the improvement plans for Bear Valley will bring a needed boost to the county and request that all governmental agencies look to support redevelopment, rather then impede it with upfront fees and other obstacles.
A strong Bear Valley means a stronger Calaveras County. We need this project to move forward right away.
Sincerely,
Board of Directors of Calaveras County
