Valley Springs Citizens of the Year are Phil and Liz Weaver of Sheng Chi Kung Fu!~ By Tammy Beilstein
Valley Springs, CA...The Valley Springs Area Business Association (VSABA) held its annual Christmas Party and Citizen of the Year Presentation on Saturday, December 12th at the Veterans Memorial Hall in Valley Springs. Last year’s Citizens of the Year, Candace and Buddy Keesey, spoke of how they’ve enjoyed holding the honor for the past 12 months and reminded the crowd of the wonderful works the current candidates did to earn their nominations. .....

The nominees for the Valley Springs Citizen of the Year were:
* Dr. Jim Green for his efforts in Africa, his involvement in Rotary and his work with local veterans.
* Wilene and Cliff Seavey for their involvement with local veterans, the VSABA, Santa’s Express and Friends of the Library.
* Dave and Jan Evans for their involvement with local veterans, the VSABA, and their many contributions of Jan’s glorious gift baskets.
* Phil and Liz Weaver for their efforts with Rotary, the VSABA, and the Sheng Chi Foundation to help serve local youth and returning war veterans.
*Vip Hale and Nick Baptista for their work on The Valley Springs News, the VSABA, Rotary, and their support of local organizations throughout the area.
At 6:30pm the announcement was made that this year’s Valley Springs Citizens of the Year are Phil and Liz Weaver of Sheng Chi Kung Fu. The Weavers were very surprised and humbled by the news.
“Considering the high caliber of people who were nominated I am very surprised we won,” said Liz Weaver. When asked how they find the energy and motivation to volunteer as much as they do, Weaver said, “We do the things we do because of how wonderful this community has been to us. Phil has been part of this community for 20 years and I’ve been here for almost 12 years now - being active and giving back is just natural when you live in a small town.”
Candace Keesey mentioned that while the Weavers were originally nominated because of the work mentioned above, they also support many other organizations including VSE Fine Arts Day, the Calaveras Youth Mentoring program, Natural High Day, Optimist Club via Kids Day in the Park, VS Friends of the Library and the CUSD Educational Foundation. In addition to all this, Phil Weaver is also a board member for the Society for Preservation of West Calaveras History, he volunteers to film for PATV and has filmed and edited promo pieces for local groups such as the VSABA, Tri County Autism and CUSD Ed. Foundation.
After a heartfelt speech by the Weavers and presentation of the plaque, a mouth-watering dinner catered by Jesse Carenno was served. The atmosphere then switched from ‘Presentation’ to ‘Party’ mode when festive music by The Kyle Barker Band got underway.
Congratulations to Phil and Liz Weaver, Valley Springs Citizens of the Year, for an honor well deserved.
