Welcome to the Country~by Author Charity Maness

So you’ve decided to move to the country where a New Year’s resolution may just sound something like: I will try to remember to change out of my Adidas before mucking a stall. I will call the burn day hotline before I burn a massive pile of moist debris causing a smoke cloud large enough to be seen from across the other side of town. I will embrace the sound of the neighbor’s rooster with the broken internal clock.....

I will try not to spit in front of a lady.

I will be more patient with the man driving the tractor down the middle of the road at a whopping 9 miles per hour.

I will not pretend to know what I am doing when I help someone attempt to corral their loose cattle, in fact I think I will stay in the car.

I will try to sample every vineyard within in 100 mile radius.

I will try to learn the difference between a cow, a bull, and a steer and I will never entertain the thought of ‘cow tipping.’

I will praise pigs in a blanket as the ultimate appetizer when paired beautifully with a cold can of beer.

I will try to remember that little Fluffy the Third is coyote bait and needs to be let in at dusk.

I will try to remember on the first warm Spring day that the lake is filled with snow melt.

I will not hold my ground in my eco friendly subcompact against a 2 ton dually, I will let them pass and wash the mud from my car when I get home, and then look into purchasing a Hummer.

I will try to remember that fertilizer is not something that you buy, it is something you get from your neighbor…kind of like a cup of sugar in the city.

I will try to spend as many evenings as I can admiring the celestial beauty of the night sky.

And finally:

I will fly our American Flag with pride.
Until next time…welcome to the country.
