Spring is in the Air....Demonstration Garden Opens This Saturday, February 27th!

Calaveras Master Gardeners welcome the public back to their Demonstration Garden on February 27, 2010. While the garden has been resting Master Gardeners have been busy preparing another series of interesting and informative events for the 2010 season. The February 27 Open Garden Day will be held from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas. The featured topics will be “Bare Root Gardening” and “Seed Starting”. The bare root session will begin at 10:30 a.m. and the seed session at 11:15 a.m. This event will be held rain or shine....

Bare root gardening refers to certain trees, shrubs, vines, and some perennials that are sold for planting with the soil removed from their roots. These plants are less expensive than the same varieties sold in containers later in the year. Bare root need to be planted in late winter or early spring. Some bare root plants commonly sold at nurseries are: fruit trees, grapes, berries, and asparagus. Those attending the presentation will learn about the advantages of planting bare-root and how to properly plant and maintain bare root plantings. As part of this presentation Master Gardeners will demonstrate planting an actual bare root tree.

Starting plants, especially vegetables, from seed is an excellent way to save money yet have fresh, home-grown produce and all year long in some instances. The demonstration on starting plants from seed will show how to start seeds in pots, how to save money using inexpensive methods to start seeds, what type of conditions are best for starting seeds and answer attendees’ questions relating to growing plants from seed.

Gardening information is offered free of charge. In addition, the learning center will be staffed by Master Gardeners who will answer questions and distribute reference information. Plants propagated by Master Gardeners will be available for sale and tours of the demonstration garden will be offered to interested members of the public.

When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.

For additional details contact the UC Cooperative Extension office at 754-6477 or Betty Merit at 728-0106.
