Wake Up Your Beds!...Garden Planning, Composting, Mulching, Drip Irrigation Featured at Open Garden Day
Master Gardeners’ Open Garden Day will be held March 27 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m. at the Master Gardeners’ Demonstration Garden at the Government Center, 891 Mountain Ranch Road, San Andreas. “Waking Up Your Beds” is the featured topic. With the approach of spring it is time to prepare the garden for planting. This can be a big undertaking but Master Gardeners make it easier as they discuss and demonstrate several critical elements of garden preparation: planning, improving the soil, mulching, and irrigation. The session begins at 10:30 a.m. and will be held rain or shine....
The miracle of composting from decomposing materials..
to rich organic soil
The four part presentation will begin with tips on planning your garden before planting. A well planned garden is one that has considered location, size, accessibility, and a host of other factors. Then it’s on to that key ingredient of a successful garden - good soil.
Presenters will discuss how to compost, its many benefits, and demonstrate an interesting method of composting – sheet composting. Another often overlooked part of garden preparation is mulching. The beneficial uses of mulches will be explained in this session. The final segment will focus on efficient use of water in the garden through drip irrigation and will include a demonstration on how to install a small drip system.
Gardening information is offered free of charge. In addition, the learning center will be staffed by Master Gardeners who will answer questions and distribute reference information. Plants propagated by Master Gardeners will be available for sale and tours of the garden may be arranged upon request.
When the garden is not open, home gardening assistance is offered by Master Gardeners through the Help Line: 754-2880. The public may call the number, leave a message regarding the problem, and a Master Gardener will return the call.
