Leter to the Editor~by Doug McKee of The Calaveras Business Coalition

"May 28, 2010...Letter to the Editor: The Calaveras Business Coalition (CBC) is comprised of local business leaders, business owners and private citizens who are concerned about the direction of Calaveras County. We believe that an un-friendly business environment has been created and has significantly contributed to the decline in our economy, unemployment higher than our neighboring counties and a serious decrease in emergency services. The CBC has broad-based support and includes over 60 individual donors.....

Recent statements of “facts” and allegations in articles in the Calaveras Enterprise and letters to the editor are simply false and unfounded. We have been accused of missing financial filing deadlines. The Enterprise stated we missed the March 22nd filing deadline when, in fact, we were not formed until March 24th, and therefore were not required to meet that deadline. We are in compliance with all required deadlines and reporting.

We have not targeted one incumbent supervisor. We have made donations to multiple candidates seeking county office. In district 5 we believe all of the candidates are pro-business, and therefore, made donations to all those candidates. One candidate returned the donation because of a professional conflict of interest. No candidate seeking office is responsible for decisions made by the CBC. We have made decisions on whom to support and information to share with the public based on the input to our committee and our supporters.

We do not support the policy of personal attacks in politics. We sent a mailer to the residents of district 3. The mailer included no references to Ms. Callaway’s personal life or history. The mailer was policy based. No one member of the committee was responsible for the content of the mailer; it was the result of a committee effort. The contents of the mailer were a compilation of Ms. Callaway’s voting record, public statements, and an opinion of one of her constituents. To call that mailer “mean-spirited” or an “attack piece” is ludicrous.

We have no hidden agenda. Our sole purpose is to support candidates that believe in a pro-business environment; that support private property rights; and listen to the taxpayers input when making key decisions. We believe every citizen regardless of who they are related to, has the right to participate in the political process, and support candidates who share their philosophy.
