Letter to the Editor~by Sunny Sorenson
"Dirty Politics...Bill McManus, the fellow with an arsenal of mean-spirited deeds, has missed yet another filing deadline required for the upcoming election in District 3. Since candidates are bound by law to submit their financial statements by May 27, many are asking why hasn’t he or been kicked off the stump? I haven’t a clue, though it seems the PAC, backing McManus in Valley Springs, finally pulled together their act, and submitted their financial statement. Now we know they have contributed a large sum of money towards McManus’ campaign and paid for two mailers attacking his opponent, Merita Callaway....
Last month, in an effort to smear Callaway, who has always been pro business and supportive of constituents in District 3, McManus tried to squirm out of the in-your-face mud-slinging, slanderous postcard bearing an unauthorized photo of Callaway, and setting her up as anti-business. The same card carried a false quote by association to the Klines. McManus, claiming innocence on this piece of slimy politics, was quoted in one paper, “I don’t know that I saw it before it went out. I haven’t even seen the mailer.” I don’t suppose he knew either, that according to The Mountain Chronicle’s research, the Calaveras Business Coalition’s treasurer, Doug McKee, wrote the check for printing and mailing the flyer. Maybe McManus has a short memory or maybe McKee doesn’t talk to him.
With a restraining order and a conviction against him, a penchant for not knowing what’s going on in his campaign, and a talent for allowing his strings to be pulled at will, it seems McManus would be a likely candidate as MC for a hog-calling contest rather than a political one. That illuminates the second question-- why IS this guy running for supervisor in District 3? The answer would be, he isn’t. Those running the so-called Calaveras Business Coalition down in District 5 are.
Frankly, to me, this entire bunch is beyond scary and I hope voters in District 3 won’t be lining up for glass-lined stomachs when they approach the polls on June 8.
