Amador County Community Band To Tour White House
Jackson, CA...Band leader Ernie Kapphahn was so pleased and proud to be able to tour the White House with his fellow musicians that he asked us to assist in preparing a press release about the band’s trip to the Sousa Festival in Washington this coming weekend. The roughly 30 members of the Amador County Community Band have come a long way since their formation in September 2001. But this Friday at noon might mark the farthest travel and the loftiest destination. That’s when 27 members of the group will be on a tour of the White House arranged by the Washington D.C. office of Congressman Dan Lungren (R-CA)....
But besides stopping to smell the Roses in the Rose Garden, the band will be performing throughout the weekend during the National Community Concert Band Sousa Festival at venues around the District.
The band was one of seven bands selected to perform at the festival celebrating the life and music of John Philip Sousa, the “March King.” Their trip will include a performance at Schlesinger Hall in Alexandria, VA as well as playing in a combined band of over 300 musicians at the Air Force Memorial under the direction of Col. Arnald D. Gabriel, conductor emeritus of the Air Force Band.
The band will also tour the sights of D.C., visit the grave of John Philip Sousa (who was born in Washington D.C.), as well as participate in a clinic set up just for the Amador Band by composer/arranger and maestro Loras Schissel.
The band is under the direction of Ernest Kapphahn, who will be assisted by associate conductor Irv Gidding. The musicians are mostly paying for the expenses of the trip with the aid of community donations. Kapphahn says that the band is proud to represent Northern California and to be able to play alongside such noted bands as the Los Angeles Police Department Concert Band and the Greater Miami Symphonic Band.
"We consider it a great honor to have been selected to play, and we're looking forward to our trip and White House tour,” said Kapphah, for whom this will be kind of a swan song. He has conducted the band the past nine years. When the musicians return, he will hand over the baton to Steve Chambers. Kapphahn will take a chair and continue to perform.
