Dog’s Strut their Stuff at Dog Day Afternoon~by Charity Maness
On toasty Saturday, July 10, dog owners were lead by their canine partners while they strutted their stuff to raise funds for the Calaveras Humane Society at Copperopolis Town Square. About 25 dogs showed up dressed in their finery (mostly their birthday suits) and ready to show their mad skills. Little Jill, Jake Toberer’s Border Collie, would gladly shake hands, lay, and dance toe to toe for a simple scratch behind the ears. Guinness, a 16 month old Great Dane, weighing in at 160 pounds showed off his svelte physique which won him first place in the ‘Best Summer Body’ category. Others wore their .......

cool shades, bandanas, Hawaiian leis, and various skirts, shirts and hats. There was musical mats, held on the lawn, last dog with a mat when the music stopped won a prize. There was a small parade and tough voting. The prizes handed out were chew toys, water bowls, and various other items that any dog would covet.
All this glitz and glamour was to raise funds for the spay and neuter program through the Calaveras Humane Society. The CHS offers vouchers for those in financial need to help offset the cost of spaying or neutering their pet, saving the pet owner up to $40.00. There are many animals available to adopt at the Humane Society located at 891 Mountain Ranch Road or call 754-6509 to make an appointment to see an animal that is in foster care awaiting their forever family.
On this day a foster volunteer brought Gypsy a 4 year old German Shorthair/ Pointer mix. The volunteers showcasing Gypsy told of her bio, which sounded much like something out of a romance novel: likes riding in cars, long walks on the beach, and soft tummy rubs. When an animal is adopted from the humane society it is altered, has all current and up to date shots, has a vet check, and a heartworm check. Dogs also, because they have been fostered, come with a description of their personalities so that one can find the best fit just for them or their family. Adoptions cost about $200.00 for a dog.
If you missed today’s Dog Day Afternoon Linda Stefanick of Town Square announced that there will be another one closer to Halloween, this time including cats and possibly other domesticated animals. The emphasis on that day will be, of course, Halloween costumes. This gives you plenty of time to prepare.
Town Square is a dog friendly park with self service ‘pick up’ baggies and trash receptacles just for your dogs needs.
