Avoid Mosquito Bites – And West Nile Virus
San Andreas, CA....The California Department of Public Health has announced the first confirmed human cases of West Nile virus in two women from Stanislaus County. West Nile virus is present in all California counties. The Calaveras County Public Health Department recommends that all persons take preventive steps to avoid mosquito bites and prevent mosquito breeding...
Use insect repellent containing DEET, picaridin, oil of lemon eucalyptus or IR 3535. Follow use directions carefully
Wear long sleeved shirts and pants to avoid mosquito bites
Avoid being outdoors at dawn and dusk and wear repellent if you must be outside
Make sure doors and window screens fit tight
Drain all standing water. Mosquitoes lay eggs in standing water. Even a small amount of water will let mosquitoes hatch.
If you have a pond, use mosquito fish or dunks to kill mosquito larvae
The California Department of Public Health monitors West Nile virus activity. Birds and
tree squirrels that have recently died can be reported to the state by phone at
1-877-968-2473 or at www.westnile.ca.gov.
Further information on testing and prevention is available at
