Copperopolis Branch Library Saved from the Chopping Block~by Charity Maness
Copperopolis, CA....Due to constant budget constraints Calaveras Libraries came under the microscope in hopes of relieving some of the financial woes that burden our county. Prior to contemplating closures, staff was cut, hours were reduced and services were discontinued. However, this did not seem to be enough resulting in a “17.5% cut to the Library budget.” .....
When the other branch libraries within the county realized the desperate situation one of their branches was in, their “friends of the library” groups rallied their forces and raised 21k to reinstate their literacy programs and book delivery service, but most importantly, this generous one time gift keeps the doors of our libraries open. Instrumental in this gift were Murphys, Arnold, Mokelumne Hill, Angels Camp, Valley Springs, and Copperopolis Branch Friends of the Library groups.
While hours may still be shortened and some positions are left vacant to save money, the libraries will remain open. However, it has been recommended that “If additional cost cutting measures are needed by the library system beyond the 17.5%, it is recommended that the West Point Branch Library be closed.”
The local libraries not only offer books, dvds, and computer use, they offer Adult tutoring, children’s programs, computer instruction, University exam proctor, and interlibrary loans.
Contact your local branch if you would like to help your libraries stay open.
