Letter to the Editor~by Al Duncan
Well now, It's about time. Calaveras looks for septic alternatives...In Alaska, with 4 ft. of permafrost, what can they do? In New Orleans, where the dead are buried above ground, what can they do? In Countries, where it is almost solid rock, what can they do? On tugboats, with a crew of 8, when in port, where only clean water discharge is allowed, what can they do? The answer is flush their toilets...
Yet Calaveras & other counties still haven't a clue how to do that unless they use expensive septic systems with filters, pumps, alarms, etc. all of which can fail.
In a county with many hundreds of lot owners, paying taxes on lots 1/2 ac. and larger with a county water supply they can't figure out what to do about septage issues.
Some places burn it & use the residue for the gardens.
Some counties dig a deep very deep pit, some areas have a "step" system that has periodic pumping of septic tanks. But not Calaveras.
Air quality control, says no to the burn idea, the county won't allow "gray water" for subterranean discharge to plants or crops. Which saves water usage and solves other issues.
It's time the county joined the 21 century and solved this problem. There would be more money coming in with new taxes, less new developments with older ones filling up which already have roads, water, fire hydrants, schools, fire departments, churches, etc. etc.
Get with it environmental health people, wake up & smell the septage.
