MT School Board Deals with Soon to be Vacant Superintendent Position Issue ~ By, Charity Maness (Article Moved Back Up Because of Active Comments)

Angels Camp, CA...With 3 board members, one superintendent, approximately 9 parents and one administrator in attendance the MT School board special meeting came to order. While the parents concerns were reiterated over lack of funding and cuts to services, one mother of three brought up "what seemed to be a logical and creative solution to a few of the schools issues."

Addressing the board Christie brought forth the idea that volunteers could man the now closed libraries and possibly work some of the yard duty slots. Pointing out that the children are losing out with cut library hours and less safe play time. While Board member Timothy Randall applauded the volunteer efforts at both school sites, he felt that it was a legislative issue with the union. Board President Gary McGeorge felt the subject should be brought forth in negotiations. However, current Superintendent Kathy Northington pointed out that the mere fact of volunteers working a job for free that was a cut paid position would not only bode poorly with the unions, it may be illegal. Christie asked that the issue be revisited, pointing out that she brought this idea to the board last year, and will continue to do so in the future.

Pat Hopper addressed the board regarding unification, but was promptly denied further discussion because it was not an agenda item.

MT School board’s closed session meeting today was not only regarding the now common reference to ‘conference with labor negotiator’ for both educators and school employees, but most notably was item #3 on the closed session agenda dealing with “Personnel—Public Employment Title-District Superintendent.” This raised concerns from parents wondering at the cost, the applicants and a final decision made with seemingly no community input. A teacher, prior to the meeting, expressed concern that maybe the teachers rights had been violated, understanding that the teachers had a right to form a committee to oversee if not review the applications for superintendent. However, Board President Gary McGeorge had received word from counsel that the board was within their rights to appoint a superintendent if they so chose.

After closed session, the board announced that they had voted 3-0 in favor of considering two options; a superintendent/principal position or a superintendent position. To be agendized at the next board meeting where they will “take action at that time.”

Gary reiterated this is an appointment only, no applications are being accepted.
