2010 State Roping Champion Robert Moore Competes at Nationals in Reno~ By, Charity Maness
Copperopolis, CA.... resident Robert Moore starting roping seven years ago at the age of 35. Up against much younger yet more seasoned ropers, he has made a name for himself in a very short time. Training with his Uncle Jerry Nation, friend Rodney Clark and Professional Cowboys Association roper Russ Rodman has led Robert to compete in approximately 70 competitions. This year, at 42, all that training and time invested paid off with the highly coveted title of Division 3 State Champion and region 5 high point winner. Not one to sit back and bask in the glow of his achievements he chose to take his skills and success a step further; last weekend Robert and his partner Sean Rasmussen competed at the American Cowboys Team Roping Association National Championships in Reno Nevada. Competing against approximately 1200 other teams Robert and his partner proudly finished 50th high team....
Robert shares his love of roping with his children and grandchildren who affectionately call him Papa Rope Cow. This year’s winnings have included a California Year End Champion saddle, with breast collar and pad, a belt buckle for region 5 high point winner and cash for State Champion.
The Moore name is synonymous with horses/livestock in Copper. His daughter Holly ran for Calaveras Saddle Queen crown in 2009 and Oakdale Saddle Queen in 2010, a competition that involves so much more than a beautiful smile. The contestants are judged on not only an interview and wave but on equitation, reigning pattern, and a barrel race. To complete these to some degree of success one must be very well schooled in horsemanship. His daughter Michaela (husband Ryan recently home from Iraq) spent years in 4-H and FFA raising a multitude of livestock. His youngest daughter, Kaegen, 9 years old, recently won a dummy roping contest, and can’t wait to rope on a “real steer”. Along with Holly and Michaela, and Keagan, wife Dyana, daughter Amber, and son Hunter all support their dad and are very proud of his achievements.
