As the first class in the series began, on December 1, 2010 at 2:00, the ladies filed into the large newly remodeled craft room projects and machines in hand, ready to tackle the days’ creation, an apron complete with pot holder pockets. The youngest participant was Carina. At 13 she was a 5 year veteran of sewing. At eight years old she took part in the Country Cloth ‘Camp Sew-fun’ that is offered every summer for kids 8 to 18 covering the basics from A-Z of sewing and quickly became hooked. She has even outgrown the machine that she was given as part of the Camp Sew Fun class.
Each student absorbed Ginny’s instructions as they tucked, pinned, ironed, and sewed their projects. While sewing to some might seem as a sedentary past time, one visit to this class and you will quickly learn that sewing is not for the idle, the measuring, the ironing, the pinning, more ironing, sewing, etc. When entering the shop, you are assaulted (in a good way) with a myriad of colors and textures, from the fabric in the racks to the quilts both simple and intricate hanging on every conceivable previously empty wall space. As if fabric was not enough, there are beads, trimmings, buttons, books, batting, and of course the beloved toy box nestled in the same spot it was when my kids were little.
Country Cloth Shop opened its doors in August of 1980 and has been owned and operated by Ginny and Chuck Duffy ever since that first day. While Ginny cut, stocked, and created with fabric, her husband repaired almost any sewing machine known to man with skill and ease. Recently Ginny has handed over the reins to her daughter Kathy to carry on the fabric tradition. Operating as one of only a handful of quilt shops in the tri county area, Kathy is hoping to try a lot of new things while not forgetting the basics of quilting, sewing and embroidery. As a Bernina distributor the Country Cloth Shop carries, teaches, and repairs all things Bernina, from basic sewing machines to computerized embroidery machines that ‘do it all’ at the touch of a button. When a person purchases a Bernina from Country Cloth, that machine comes with “free lessons for as long as you own the machine.”
The 12 days of Christmas classes are designed for beginners, yet with the minimum requirement being that one must be able to thread the top and bottom threads of their machine and able to sew with minimal assistance. For those wishing to learn how to sew, Country Cloth offers classes specifically designed to cover the basics.
