Calaveras County Santa Claus Travel Update`by Patrick Works
Angels Camp, CA..It seems Santa Claus is continuing to spend time catching up with all the girls and boys of Calaveras County as Christmas day approaches. Tonight Santa made a stop at the US Bank branch on Main St. in Angels Camp as the Angels Centennial Rotary Club hosted it's annual event for local families. Local children from throughout our community were joined by families of the staff of US Bank and the families of members of Angels Camp Centennial Rotary to meet Santa, enjoy pizza and music, and start off the holiday right here in Angels Camp....

David Hanson, current president of the local Rotary, gave this reporter a bit of time to describe the club, it's membership, and what they are doing together for our community:
"Angels Centennial Rotary has hosted a Christmas party with Santa since 2005. While this party is great fun for all the families, the greater work during the holiday season is the "Santa's Express" project that's been going on just as long. Over 100 families are served and this year over $10,000 was raised to help needy local families both during the holiday season and throughout the year."
Angels Camp Centennial Rotary's theme is "Education and Poverty" and all the work the club does in the community helps target the resources of our community to serve and help find solutions to needs in both those areas.
Ongoing efforts in support of these goals in 2010 have included continuing donations of dictionaries to schools and libraries in our area, fundraising events such as Souper Saturday, and the recent launch of what is sure to be an annual "must attend" event here in Angels Camp; the "Beer and Brats" festivities at Utica Park. In it's inaugural year the "Beer and Brats" event was able to endow scholarships for two local high school students.
Together with West Calaveras Rotary and all four Calaveras County Rotary Clubs that are a part of Rotary International, Angels Camp Centennial Rotary has lead efforts to begin construction of the community garden at the Resource Center/Food Bank near San Andreas just off Pool Station Road. Groundbreaking is long past and the initial plumbing work is complete. When the winter season concludes planting will have begun on what is sure to be a wonderful resource for all the people of our region.
During this season of giving, Angels Camp Centennial Rotary has found support from many local sources. Sierra Hills Market has made possible greatly reduced costs of food going to so many families, as well as logistical and other support in partnership with JS West. These local business leaders, as well as generous families all over Calaveras County, are seeing that every child in our area has a merry Christmas.
A festive start to Christmas this year was enjoyed by all in attendance at the US Bank, as Santa had a gift for each child and a smile for everyone young and old. Santa then rushed off to see to his reindeer, who he told us were grazing nearby under the watchful eye of Mrs. Claus.
