Copperopolis Business Association Holds Essay Contest!
Copperoplis, CA...During the Christmas Extravaganza, a essay contest was held for students of all ages with the theme "What does the Holiday Saeason mean to you, and why?" The winners received cash prizes and were invited to be dignitaries in the Christmas parade. Below are the winning essays....
SNOW KING: Jordan Strauch - 6th Grade
The holiday season means to me to have a great time with family and friends. It's not about presents and eating junk food. It's about being thankful for what we have, and to know that some men and women don't know what it feels like to have a warm place to stay during winter when it gets cold, or to have a home cooked meal when they're hungry.
So while we sit by the fire, eat candy, and open presents, we should keep in mind that some people are less fortunate than us, and be thankful for what we have. That's what the holiday season means to me.
SNOW QUEEN: Lily Jackson
(Essay to be printed.)
SNOW PRINCE: Cooper Morland - 2nd Grade
Christmas is important to me for many reasons. On of the reasons is that we get to have a big feast. We also get to sit around the fire. Also we have a Christmas tree. It is Jesus's birthday, too. We get presents too.
(Signed: Cooper Morlan) Ho Ho Ho! Ho Ho Ho! Ho Ho Ho!
SNOW PRINCESS: Bonnie Shryock -
The holiday season makes me think of my family. I love everyone in my family. We always have a big party at Grandpa Jim's, with my aunts and uncles and cousins. We have fun, presents, and good food.
I am luck and the holiday season means I want other children to feel good too. My brother and I are packing my shoe box full of Christmas presents for a child who lives far away.
I am sending pens and paint brushes and paper, because art is fun. I will add candy and a small tea party set, too. My shoe box will be delivered to a child in a far away country.
We will follow our shoe boxes on the computer and find out who it gets delivered to. I hope my shoe box gives her a HAPPY DAY! (Signed: "Love, Bonnie")
HONORABLE MENTION: Trica Welch - 7th Grade
The best part of Christmas is all the happiness it brings. I like seeing the happiness in everyone's faces. When someone gets to see a family member that they haven't seen in a long time it makes them smile. It is really nice to see the excitement in little children waiting to open their gifts. I enjoy seeing people dress up their pets and taking them to see Santa. This makes people smile and laugh. I also like singing Christmas carols. We use to go to the club every year with all our family and sing karaoke with Christmas carols. Everyone had so much fun. It is a nice way to end a year, with lots of happiness and cheer!
HONORABLE MENTION: Samantha Lopes - 9th Grade
Holidays were never special; actually they were really depressing and difficult for my family. Holidays changed for me at age seven when my dad passed away and my brother and I moved in with my Auntie Di and Uncle Rick. Holidays then became magical. My brother and I have been living with my Autie and Uncle for eight years now and they have managed to make every single holiday special in its own way.
Through my experiences in their home, I have learned that it's not about the presents we receive, it's not about where we travel, and it is not about worrying about money and if we have enought to spend on each other. What has made the holidays so very special over these past eight years is simply being together and having no worries apart from our time spent together.
What I have learned, is that I want to give my children one day, the same wonderful holidays that my Auntie and Uncle have given me. Sure, it would be fun to provide a tree, fun gifts, favorite foods and all the trimmings that come to mind when you think of Christmas, but the most important thing to have during the holidays is each other.
