Mother Lode Friends of Music Resumes its 2010/11 Season with a Concert of Chamber Music on January 30th!

Sutter Creek, CA...The Mother Lode Friends of Music, the classical music performance society serving the central region of the Sierra foothills, resumes its 2010-2011 season with a concert of chamber music on Sunday, January 30 at 2 p.m. at the Church of the Nazarene, 14050 Ridge Road, in Sutter Creek. The concert will feature duo-pianists Aileen James and Ken Hardin performing works by Johannes Brahms and Gabriel Fauré for one-piano, four-hands, and the Zephyr Wind Quintet, performing works by 20th-century composers Alfred Uhl, Eric Ewazen and Malcolm Arnold....

The concert is free and open to the public.

Aileen James and Ken Hardin are professional pianists now based in Grass Valley. James began her musical training at the age of 5 and made her professional debut at the age of 15, performing Tchaikovsky's Piano Concerto No. 1 with the MeremblumYouth Symphony in Los Angeles. She holds bachelor's and master's degrees in performance and music history, and a Doctorate in Musical Arts in Performance from Stanford University. Additional training was acquired at the University of Southern California, the Schubert Institute in Austria and the Royaumont Music Festival in France. An acclaimed performer as soloist and chamber musician, she has served on the faculties of Pacific Union College and Santa Clara University. From 1986 to 1997 she was Artistic Director of the American Pianists Association in Indianopolis. As a resident of Grass Valley, she remains active as a teacher and performer and serves on the board of the InConcertSierra concert series.

Ken Hardin began piano lessons at the age of four in his hometown of Whittier and pursued a musical career as jazz musician, vocal coach, and conductor in the Los Angeles metropolitan area. He was for many years on the faculty of CSU-Northridge.
Since moving to Nevada County in 1984, he has been active as a pianist, conductor, coach and teacher. He serves as Artistic Director of the InConcertSierra series, choral conductor for Sierra College Choir Nevada County, and musical director for the Foothill Theatre Company.

James and Hardin will be performing the "Dolly" Suite of French composer Gabriel Fauré and the Variations on a Theme of Haydn of Johannes Brahms.

The Zephyr Wind Quintet, formed in 2009, is composed of flutist Karen Bjork, oboist Chris Sunahara, clarinetist Hank King, bassoonist Eva Kidwell, and hornist Helen Kirkpatrick-Halseth. With the exception of King, a resident of Pioneer and a prominent member of the musical community of the central foothills, all performers are active professional musicians residing in the Sacramento metropolitan region.

The quintet will be performing "Vier Stücke" by Austrian composer Alfred Uhl (1909 - 1992), "Roaring Fork," composed in 1993 by contemporary American composer Eric Ewazen (1954 -) as an evocative homage to the Roaring Fork River in Colorado, and the delightfully light-hearted and witty "Three Shanties," based on old English sailor tunes by British composer Malcolm Arnold (1921-2006).
