Calaveras Humane Society Adoption Center Anniversary !!!~ By Anne Ellis

Calaveras County, CA.....Wow, what a year it has been! Since the Adoption Center opened last February in the CHS Thrift Store in Arnold, 73 cats have been adopted. That is 73 cats in 42 weeks. Many of these cats were ADULTS ! And those 73 cats account for over 28% of the 255 cats saved by CHS from the County shelter in 2010. In addition to adopting out cats, we give out CHS spay/neuter vouchers, hand out pet care information, display photos and bios of the dogs AND cats available at the County shelter and through CHS foster care and generally educate the public about CHS. .....

The center couldn’t be open without the help of many volunteers, some of whom work behind the scenes to bring supplies, do laundry, make up photo flyers and post on line and around the area, many “taxi” drivers who deliver the cats and the many fosters willing to send their charges in for 3 days and trust the trained volunteers to adopt out their cats for them. Thank you also to the Thrift Store employees for pitching in to help whenever needed.

Here’s what cat team leader and foster Ivy Morrow had to say about the adoption center: “My dear sweet Roxy, aka Roswell, was adopted from the Center during the holidays. I wasn't there to say farewell to her and she went all the way to L.A. Volunteers who met the adopters said what a great young couple they were. My follow up call to Roxy's new house was pretty heartwarming, they love her and she not only sleeps with them but gets under the covers. Way to pick a home, Roxy girl! Those weekends at the adoption center paid off.”

Thanks to all - past and present - who have helped to make this last year so wonderful. If I have missed any fosters, transporters or volunteers, I apologize.

Volunteering at the center is fun. 4 hour shifts, it’s CLIMATE CONTROLLED and you get to play with the cats. For many who can not have cats at home, this is a great replacement. So if you have a few hours to spare once a month, please come join us!

The Adoption Center is located within the CHS Thrift Store in Meadowmont Center between Big Trees Market and Round Table Pizza. Cat Adoption days are currently Thursdays through Saturdays during store hours.
