Letter to The Editor~by Jami Southard, daughter of Man Killed by Pit Bulls Last Year
First, let me thank you for the story you did...we appreciate all the stories out there, most of them anyway, my dad was much loved & honored, a much decorated vietnam vet who did 3 tours. He was extremely fit for his age & those dogs tore him up. It was painfully obvious that he fought hard for his life. Sheryl is pleading not guilty, after all my dad did for her, she is prolonging our need for closure. There have been 4 continuances just for the pre-lim!! People in the DA's office have told me that ....
the detectives who have to testify are intimidated by the defense lawyer, Ken Foley. The Calaveras Sherrif, Gary Kuntz, says this is an excuse...the detective should have been able to testify no matter if he was busy with another case. (I forgot to mention that the last continuance was caused by the PROSECUTION!!
My mother was slowly recovering from a catastrophic illness when this happened to my dad. because of how he died, she is not eligible for his v.a. benefits. she is supposed to live on reduced social security, because she was forced to take it early. we have had to sell their business, home & everything they owned for pennies on the dollar. She will be moving to southern CA with me & my family til she can get back on her feet. I have been away from my husband and children for almost 6 months now. hopefully, we will be going to my home in early march. Due to the continuances, I will have to make 1000 mile round trips to attend court proceedings that may or may not happen!! yet another financial burden on our family. All thanks to Sheryl Sellers and her neglect to care for her animals properly. Had my dad been aware of her previous history with vicious dogs, he NEVER would have allowed them on the property!
If you can use this memo in anyway or want to post it, please do. I am so mad, sad & frustrated with this entire situation. I was completely naive with court procedures & have no faith in the justice system at this point.
I appreciate you taking the time to read this. I don't want this to be forgotten. my dad deserved better than the treatment we are getting from the Calaveras court system. When i vented my frustration in court, i was threatened with arrest!!
