Calaveras County Jr. Livestock Boosters Came Through Again Last Eve~by Patrick Works

Calaveras Fairgrounds, Mark Twain Hall, Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras County Junior Livestock Boosters came through again tonight, as the Mark Twain Hall was full to capacity with local folk ready for a full meal. time to spend with their friends, and a chance to celebrate and support our local youth raising livestock for sale at this years upcoming Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jumping Jubilee. 25 or more years back, kids raising stock in our community offered that stock at auction at the fair; and those kids came out with a loss.....

More than one member of our local rancher neighbors saw this unfold, and hoped that the future endeavors by the kids of Calaveras County would not be met with such disappointment, but rather with support. Seeing our local kids being so disappointed after their hard work, they set out to offer their hard earned cash to make sure the kids would at least break even.

Tonight's dinner and dance started with what might well be described as a poker game:

"Who's willing to put up $100?" Long ago that would have been enough...and at the time it served to make tonight's event possible. Quite a number of those who first anted up for the kids all those years ago were in attendance tonight. Among them, Jim and Cathy Burns who took some time away from the festivities to give some history on the event and told this reporter the story above.

25 years later, it's not just a handful of ranchers. The entire county seems to have made this a regular event. Last night the Mark Twain Hall was as full as it's ever been.

This evening's dinner and dance invitation met with 850 or more supporters of our local kids who've dedicated themselves to raising stock and bringing them to auction at the annual county fair at the Frog Jump. It seems that the poker game paid off in spades. Quite a bit more than $100 was raised tonight.

The dollars flew during the live auction, after a wonderful meal had been set and served by Chef Loree, Michael O'Keefe, and a host of others who volunteered their time and energy. Beer and wine were flowing, and plates PILED with an amazing sliced cross rib roast, beans, potatoes, and garlic bread kept coming back for seconds. This reporter was forcibly detained and made to join the feast. Putting on my food reviewers hat after the meal, I made some quick surveys and conclude that this was definitely a 4 star meal.

850 diners were served within less than an hour tonight, after which the floor was cleared for dancing as "Paul Justin and the Saloonaatix" blew the roof off the Mark Twain Hall and tables were cleared to make room for dancing and celebration by all.

This evening was all about the kids of Calaveras County, what they are doing to continue the tradition of raising stock for auction at our County Fair, and to ensure that whatever the market price might be for their stock, that these kids will not labor at a commercial loss when their stock comes up for sale.

And of course it was a great party. You are hereby invited to buy a ticket for next year's Junior Livestock Boosters Dinner and Dance.

If you were not able to be at tonight's event, please make a point of attending the livestock auction at the Fair this May.

Buy a hog. You'll be glad you did.
