Dogs as People~by The Copperopolis Curmudgeon

In America pet owners spend approximately $41 billion dollars that’s billion with a “B” not trillion like our President thinks is reasonable . . . on their pets . . . not to say that’s a bad thing because my family is right there in this spending spree but you have to ask your self why . . .There are many cute sayings that get plastered on the internet like, “Gee I wish I was as good as my dog thinks I am.” And I cannot count the poems and stories about dogs trying to get into heaven.....So what is this attachment we have for our dogs? Let me say this . . . for some reason the primal need for humans and dogs is a bond of trust, love, forgiveness (This is the dog not the human forgiving) and an emotional want to be needed by both.....

Once the bond has started it keeps getting stronger and it is usually the dog teaching the human how this works because we are supposed to be the masters but look at this from a dog’s view.

They have ways of greeting each other which is the pack mentality . . . they sniff each others butts and urine samples that mark territory. Go ahead try that with a friend and see how that works out . . .

They jump up and lick each other on the mouth and nose and the pecking order is established so that there is an alpha male and an alpha female and everyone else rolls on their back in submission of these two positions of superiority. In aggression they snarl and show their teeth.

So what do we teach our dogs? Stay down! No jumping on the company it’s rude and stick your nose in my crotch again and you are going to go outside!!!!! Oh and God help you if you pee on the oriental rugs again!

And then our new dog needs to come to terms with the fact that when WE are happy we smile and show our teeth . . . Confusing?

You bet and they learn to adjust to this human behavior just so they can be OUR friends and the reward is a big bowl of crunchy dog chow . . . Not sure it’s worth it but they do adjust.

So we have a couple of dogs around here . . . two Golden Retrievers, a female Boxer and Boo Boo . . . The male Goldie is the confused alpha dog . . . 90 pounds of orange fur and he wants to be the lap dog . . . the poor female Goldie has had three litters of wonderful pups and it has taken a mental toll on her.

If you have ever seen female dogs raise litters you know that one of the duties of the mother dog is to eat all of the puppy crap. Our female is such a wonderful mother dog that even though her pups are long gone she still instinctively eats goat crap, chicken crap, cat crap . . . and I swear she smiles at me when I tell her that’s nasty . . . oh and she carries kittens around by their heads . . . not to hurt them but because they sleep with her.

The Boxer is getting on in years and is the alpha female maintaining a position of dignity that allows her to eat everyone’s food all the time even when she is not hungry . . . reminds me a lot of a bored teenager except she doesn’t know how to text message her friends . . .

So a couple of years ago we get this bright idea to get my wife the cute little lap dog that she has always wanted for our anniversary. My daughter and I go online and find a breeder up in Oroville that has Maltipoo pups . . . you know the little wussy dogs for little wussy folks. Remember I said this . . .

So we get the dog home after stopping at Petco and greatly contributing to the $41 billion pet industry . . . and my wife is elated . . . she and my other daughters are beside themselves and because he looks like a little black bear cub they dubbed him “Bear”.

You know me . . . my cynical comment is you have to be ashamed of a dog like that . . . his name should be Boo Boo cuz he’s a little wussy dog!!! And the girls in this house gave me nothing but grief for calling him that name.

Now back to my point about dogs as people . . . apparently I had missed the point that we don’t adopt our dogs . . . they adopt us and they make no mistake in letting everyone know that you belong to them.

The first sign we had a problem with Boo Boo ( Yeah the name stuck ) was when he preferred to sit with me rather than with my wife . . . now this upset my wife but it was a real shock to my male ego that this little wussy dog wanted to hang with great big me . . . especially since my daughters laughed and told me a wussy dog was a stripe off the old man’s card.

Resolve it to say he has won my heart . . . not as a wussy dog but because he is obviously the King of this house . . . he takes on anything no matter how big it is or how much it outweighs him. Because unlike the 90 pound Goldie . . . Boo Boo is a man’s dog and understands he is the guard dog of this house. No fear . . .

He has taught me that it is not about size or appearance it’s all about attitude and he thinks he is a killer beast brought to this world to do nothing more than to protect me with everything he has in his little nine pound body . . .

So when you see the great big old man riding in the Chevy truck with the little wussy dog leaning out the window with the wind blowing his ears back . . . you are looking at two guys out for a ride that understand that dogs are people and I am proud to ride with this dog with a huge heart because unlike a lot of people we both know who we are . . . were friends.

I know . . . just sit here and be quiet . . .
