Dr. Tom Hofstra of Columbia College Will Lead The first in a series of 2011 Nature Seminar

Calaveras Big Trees State Park, CA.... Dr. Tom Hofstra of Columbia College will lead the first in a series of 2011 nature seminars at Jack Knight Hall from 10 a.m. to noon on Saturday, May 7th. The program, which is free to the public, will provide a different look at plants found in the park and the Central Sierra Nevada. He will discuss the alternative lifestyles of some plants, or “Plants that live on other plants or on fungi.” The topics include plant parasitism, carnivory and mycoheterophyl (symbiotic relationships)......

Dr. Hofstra will also discuss the latest information available on Snow Plants, an interesting and relatively rare bright red plant that does not rely on sunlight. Snow plants will be popping up later in Spring inside the park as the current snow cover melts.

Other seminar topics for later this year include “Butterflies of the Sierra,” “A Pictoral History of Big Trees,” “Sierra Nevada Winter Ecology,” and “The Future of Our Sierra Parks.” The seminar series is funded by donations and memberships to nonprofit Calaveras Big Trees Association. The association funds approximately 80% of the educational and interpretive programs at the park.

All free seminars will be held in Jack Knight Hall, near the Visitor Center, at Calaveras Big Trees State Park. Admission to the Park is $8 per car.
The seminars are free and open to the public. Pack a lunch, bring the family and plan on spending the day among the Giant Sequoias. For more information call Calaveras Big Trees Association at 795-3840 or visit our web site at www.bigtrees.org
