New Melones Fishing Report for May 9th~by Melanie of Glory Hole Sports

New Melones, CA....Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 2,018,765 acre-feet of water. The lake level rose almost feet this week and is currently at 1054 ft. above sea level and 34 ft. from full capacity. Water temperature is 63-65 degrees. Water is fairly clear, with some staining in areas. Watch for floating debris, unmarked island tops, and rattlesnakes that have been flooded from their holes- we have had reports of waterlogged snakes climbing into boats. .

Bank angler Kevin Frisk of Lodi Wins Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest. He landed a beautiful 11-pound, 7-ounce, 28 and ¾" long brown trout while throwing a rainbow trout-patterned Kastmaster from shore up river in the Camp Nine area. Bank anglers could also head to local creeks like Angels Creek, or try the cove behind the marina where Kokanee Power released pen-raised rainbows recently, with Power Bait. Trollers should try the entrance of Glory Hole Cove and the waters directly in front of the cove, from 5-20 feet deep, and tie on an Uncle Larry's Power Spin, that is designed to hold Power Bait while trolling, since Power Bait is designed to smell like the hatchery feed the penned trout have been eating.

Joe Caccamo of Arnold caught a 3-pound, 4-ounce brown trout while trolling a pink hootchie behind a pink Sling Blade dodger 30' deep near the spillway. Boaters should also try nosing up into creek arms where there is running water, and still-fish there for nice holdovers.

Kokanee: Bite is wide open, with double hook-ups becoming more common as the kokanee school up. Fish are 12 1/2 ' to 15" long, and very fat and full of plankton- they should grow rapidly with all the feed out there. Trollers should begin trolling right off of Glory Hole Point and head to the spillway and the dam, right up near the dam face. Some anglers also had luck at the mouth of Angels Creek/Angels Cove. Fish are being caught from 30-45 feet deep, on shoepeg corn-tipped pink or orange Glitterbugs Micro Hootchies or RK Lures Micro Hootchies, Wedding Rings, Murphys Bugs, or Apex, trolled behind smaller Glitterbugs silver, pink or chartreuse Teardrop Dodgers, silver/gold 50/50 dodgers, or Sling Blades with silver, pink or chartreuse tape. The hot scents are garlic and Carp Spit. Anglers who brought in limits this week include Evan Foley, Harold, Jay and Rick, Glenn Woodbury, John Darroch, and Stan, Bobby and Howard (with Gary Burns of Take It To The Limit Guide Service), and Dick Niebaur (with Fish'n Dan's Guide Service).

Bass: Anglers Choice Western Rookie League held a tournament here last Saturday, with 59 teams competing. Brian and Destiny Johnson of Manteca took 1st place with 16.27-pounds, including a 664-pounder- the big fish of the day. Anglers reported fish all over the lake 0-20 feet deep, and biting a large assortment of lures- there was no particular hot bait. There were bed fish, and some top-water fish taken. Swimbaits such as Toad Thrashers and S-Wavers, Lunker Punkers, Zara Spooks, jigs/trailers, Senkos, rip-baits, split-shot baby brush hogs, dart heads... seems that anglers were throwing everything in the boat at the bass.

Dennis Roman and Dan Beishline caught a 19-pound limit of spotted bass while fun fishing with guide John Chiarpotti. Remember to practice catch and release, especially now, when bass are spawning.

Catfish: Catfish are moving into the coves and into shallower water as the water warms up. A sliding sinker rig, and a ball of crawlers or a piece of anchovy or sardine is your best bait.

Dave and Bob Stutzman of Sonora win Glory Hole Sports Big Catfish of the Week Contest with a huge 20-pound, 12-ounce cat caught in Bear Creek on crawlers- part of a 8-fish stringer of cats that they caught.

Zana and Rod Teaney caught a 10-pound, 3-ouncer in Mormon Cove on a white spinnerbait.

Crappie and bluegill: Crappie bite is on! Look for crappie on rocky flat areas to spawn, or nearby where water and feed are running into the lake right now. Target water running into the lake, such as waterfalls and other run-off areas, especially near structure. Bear Cove and Coyote Creek are also usually great spots this time of year. Use Beetle-spins, red and white crappie jigs or small or medium minnows. Paul Santos reports a 4-pound, 11-ounce crappie that he and his fishing partner caught- he is having it mounted.

New Melones Lake
This is going to be a short report, my wife is pulling me out of the house going to Sac. my daughter is having a baby. The fishing on New Melones is starting off to be the best bite in years. I have put kokanee in the boat just over 16" and several in the 15" and 14".The koks are very fat and healthy and are hitting and fighting very hard. We caught the koks on Shasta Tackle Sling Blades in Red and Gold and any blades in chrome and gold. Glitter Bug hoochies in pink any size and R and K Hoochies in orange and pink. The surface temp. is getting close to 70 and this week we started out at 32' and ended up at 40'. This is going to be a very good year for the kokanee on New Melones.

Thank you everyone that was on the boat this week had a great time.

Wow what an exciting week this has been and our area waters are living up to their name, seems this is truly the "Mother Lode" this past week. From New Melones to Tulloch and on to Lake Don Pedro the bite is on for Bows, Kokes and Kings.

NEW MELONES, Kokanee action is hot from Coyote Creek, Carson area, the Spillway and to the dam pocket limits seem to be the norm. 20' to 35'
is the strike zone and productive setups this past week have been Uncle Larry's pink tiger teamed with a Vance's watermelon dodger or try using a Shasta Sling Blade with either a U-V Humdinger or Glitter Bug Hoochie. Pautzke Fire Corn scented with garlic, Vanilla or Anise were my favorite scents this week using one kernel per lure. Dick Niebaur from Mi-Wuk had fantastic action this past here on Melones. As a footnote keep Niebaur in your thoughts as his house was hit by a fire on Thursday night with Dick being saved by his trusty Lab Moose, Dick is all right, but his home is mostly a loss.

LAKE TULLOCH, action here is all about big Rainbows, Chris Hobson, David McClung and Chris Bronis caught bows to four pounds on an outing on Friday.

They targeted the bows in the Black creek and Green Springs arm using Slim Fin, Humdinger and Ex-Cel lures and also rolling Pautzke cured shad at depths to thirty feet were very successful. As an added treat on Friday morning there was a hot bite on big Kokanee to two pounds and 17" off the south ramp using Uncle Larry's pink tiger spinners.

LAKE DON PEDRO, here the bite is a mixed bag, work the surface down to 25' for rainbows in Mexican Gulch or off Big Oak Island. Trout are hitting Slim Willies and a nightcrawler trolled down to ten feet, or run small shad lures from 15' to 25' for bows to two pounds. Kokanee Bite can be found in the Graveyard Bay or off Copper Mountain from 25' to 40'. Sockeye Slammers, hoochies or pink spinners tipped with garlic scented corn for Kokes to 15". Kings are on a good bite here off Hatch Creek or try working the open water in Fleming Bay at depths from 60' to 120' for kings in the 2.5lb range with some Chinooks to six pounds. Ex-Cel pearl or hammered silver Slim Fins are effective lures or rolling anchovies, herring or threadfin shad are producing. Don Murphy from La Grange, Ca. battled a king to the net on Saturday that weighed on at 5 lbs 10 oz. and 25" long, a great fish.

As I said what a great time to be fishing our area waters.

Good Luck!

Don Pedro
The fishing this week at Don Pedro proved successful for my three trips to Don Pedro. All my clients were greeted with plenty of action on a mixed bag of fish. Larry Sifferman, Bob Moore, Doug Philpott, Mark Sublett, Charles Wilson, Chuck and Kathy Wertz all caught fish with me.

The main body is producing the most fish for us. The rainbows are on a good bite from 20 to 50 feet and the kokanee are also from 30 to 55 feet deep and the kings can be found from 30 to over 100 feet deep.Vance's Dodgers along with Uncle Larry's spinners are working well along with an assortment of Hoochies all tipped with Pautzkes corn. The Kings have been hitting shad the best and they are also hitting Anchovies. The Rainbows are also hitting the kokanee gear.

Thank you

New Hogan Lake

Striper action is starting to heat up! This weeks outing produced line sides 3 to 5 lbs. We also caught some smaller fish we didn't keep. Try trolling the main lake from the dam to the narrows. The lethargic bass fell for shad, anchovies and haring laced with Pro-Cure scent. Our presentation was a very open role at a extremely slow speed. Target depth was 10 to 17 feet, however we marked fish as far down as 50 feet, but wasn't interested. Good news Hogan has plenty of water this year. Two of the ramps are under the water. However, the west ramp is fully operational with ample parking. The higher lake levels will only make fishing much better. Water conditions are very good with only a small amount of debris. The lake level is holding with a surface temperature 69.7 degrees.
