Angels Camp, CA...Downtown Angels Camp is at it's historic best as the banners and the traditional Old Miners Laundry have been hung across main street. All of the local prospectors and prospectettes are getting ready for the Calaveras County Fair and Frog Jump Jubilee that hops into town next week. Last week we were speaking with Fair Director Ray Malerbi and he said Calaveras County is the last county in the state to close the schools for the county fair. You really should make plans to make a trip to Calaveras County and take in a slice of Americana that is truly special....
The Traditions and Even The Laundry are Flying High in Angels Camp
Every year in May the entire community rallies around the traditions that make life in a historic area very special. This year the "Pirates of Carrots & Beans" runs from May 19-22nd and for a few days each year the eyes of the world gaze upon Calaveras County.
Mark Twain started it all with is famous book about those Celebrated Frogs and the hardworking locals here in Calaveras have burnished the story into one of the great yearly traditions. These traditions evoke support and strong emotions in this small town. We spoke with Chamber of Commerce Director Diane Gray as she admired the laundry and she mentioned that some of her son Travis's clothes from when he was but a wee lad are proudly displayed above main street.
When you visit the Fair and Frog jump it really is a huge effort by the entire community to make it happen each year. Some of the City of Angels employee's that were hanging banners and laundry across Main Street will soon be making nighttime treks to their favorite ponds to catch the Frogs that they will enter into the Frog Jump to see if this is the year that "Rosie the Ribiter's" record will be broken.
