...COLD WATER IN AREA RIVERS...STREAMS...AND LAKES...

AS WE APPROACH THE MEMORIAL DAY WEEKEND AND THE SUMMER
RECREATIONAL SEASON...THE NATIONAL WEATHER SERVICE WOULD LIKE TO
REMIND PEOPLE OF THE HIDDEN DANGERS OF THE COLD SNOWMELT WATERS
FEEDING NORTHERN CALIFORNIAS WATERWAYS.

WARMING TEMPERATURES WILL DRAW MANY PEOPLE OUTSIDE TO WATER
ACTIVITIES IN AND NEAR OUR REGIONS RIVERS...STREAMS...AND LAKES.
HOWEVER EXTRA CARE SHOULD BE EXERCISED DURING THIS TIME OF YEAR
WHEN OUR AREAS WATERS ARE RUNNING VERY COLD AND FAST DUE TO
INCREASING SNOW MELT.

WATER TEMPERATURES OVER THE NEXT FEW WEEKS ARE EXPECTED TO RUN IN
THE LOW TO MID 50S IN VALLEY RIVERS AND LAKES AND IN THE MID TO
UPPER 40S AT HIGHER ELEVATIONS. ALTHOUGH AFTERNOON AIR
TEMPERATURES MAY BE WARM...PEOPLE IN THE MUCH COLDER WATER COULD
QUICKLY EXPERIENCE HYPOTHERMIA WHICH CAN LEAD TO DROWNING.

HYPOTHERMIA IS A SUDDEN LOSS OF BODY TEMPERATURE THAT CAN BE
FATAL. WARNING SIGNS INCLUDE UNCONTROLLED SHIVERING...SLURRED
SPEECH...DROWSINESS...AND APPARENT EXHAUSTION. EVEN STRONG
SWIMMERS CAN TIRE QUICKLY IN VERY COLD WATER...AND THE COLD WATER IN
A STRONG CURRENT IS A DEADLY COMBINATION.

EVERYONE GOING INTO THE WATER SHOULD WEAR A LIFE VEST. EVEN
CHILDREN THAT ARE SIMPLY WADING ALONG A WATERWAY SHOULD WEAR ONE.

DUE TO THIS YEARS EXTREME SNOW PACK...NORTHERN CALIFORNIAS RIVERS
AND STREAMS WILL BE RUNNING VERY COLD AND FAST FOR THE NEXT
SEVERAL WEEKS. PLAN AHEAD FOR ANY TRIPS TO AREA WATERWAYS BY
HAVING LIFE VESTS AT HAND...AND WEAR THEM! PLEASE THINK BEFORE YOU
SINK!!
