Letter to the Editor~by Sandy Gleason

Started writing about my feelings on the issue of the Coe Shooting Center. Thought some of the media might also take an interest. I feel that there is something not being shared with the public regarding all of this. If there is, it more than likely didn’t start here nor will it end here. My property is at the opening of the shooting center. My husband’s family has lived in this area for over 70 years, and were some of the residents that approved the re-zoning for the cement plant, who by the way, they were employed by......

Why were none of us notified by Tom Coe or the County regarding shooting range in Valley Springs? The Planning Department said letters were sent out. We did not get one, nor did any of the neighbors that I asked.

How could this be pushed through when it should only be able to be done by the Planning Director and we don’t have one. This area was only zoned M2 for the benefit of the cement plant back in the 60’s.
Tom Coe said that Dave Silva (property manager)? repaired the fence where a young woman had gone through in her jeep. I saw her and her boyfriend make this repair. Who is not being truthful, Tom or Dave Silva?

Dave Silva told my neighbor Pamela Rogers, the day before the Planning Commission meeting that I and my husband were behind these plans. We never said anything like that.

Why are we not hearing things in a timely manner when we will be greatly affected by this? I did not know that anything was anywhere close to this stage or size, nor did I know about the 6/2/11 Planning Dept. meeting until the next day.

When Tom Coe came to me regarding the FEMA flood zone, why didn’t he take that opportunity to tell me of the size of his plans for this shooting range? I had no idea that there was anything of that size in plan.
I am very suspicious of these events. It seems to me that there is a lot going on that the public has no idea of. Especially the people in Campo Seco and on Watertown road, who will all be greatly affected, possibly in major life changing ways.

I would like to see the legality of this whole process looked into. There is obviously something wrong here. I feel that it is up to the County agencies involved to assure the public, with proof that they are following the letter of the law. In the short time I have known about this, I have not gotten any straight answers. I tried to bring this up at the Planning Commission hearing yesterday, saying that it is my understanding that what they were proposing to pass was beneath the law. The only response was, no it was not. No explanation of why it wasn’t.

I feel it is time for these Government agencies to remember “they are in a position of privilege, not power”. They need to start listening to the people, not treat us like we are idiots that can’t decide what is best for us.

The Mission Statement of this county says, “The Mission of Calaveras County Government is to provide service, infrastructure, leadership, and vision necessary to advance a safe community, maintain a high quality of life, while preserving local history and culture, and to protect personal liberties for all of its citizens.”

I sure didn’t get that message at the 6/16/11 meeting. Tom Coe lives in Saratoga, not Calaveras County. All of us that are affected the most, knew the least about this, and were not given the courtesy of an explanation, apology, or an opportunity to reopen the discussion. It was clear from the beginning of the meeting that adding a shooting range with no conditions or restrictions was going to be approved.
