Letter To the Editor "The Mightiest Vote" By Eric Jung

Bear Valley, CA...Pericles of Athens was said to skip many of his assigned meetings so that he would be taken more seriously when he did show up. Supervisor Spellman has taken the Periclean gambit to its extreme, showing up for one vote in the last five minutes of a two hour meeting after missing entirely the first 4 meetings of the Central Sierra Planning Council to which he was appointed in January by the Calaveras Board of Supervisors. He accused Supervisor Callaway of "tattling" when she noted his absences. But it can't be tattling if it's a matter of public record in which the constituents are likely to be interested...

No, I think Merita was paying tribute to the awesome power of a politician who knows he can achieve more and please more people by his absence than by his attendance, and who accomplishes more with a single vote than a roomful of conscientious drudges can in months of meetings. We can only pray that no one is injured when he exercises the awesome power of that lone vote.

Can't wait to get my fig leaf in the mail.
Eric Jung, Bear Valley
