Historic Stamp Mill Dedication at the Angels Camp Museum
The Native Sons of California along with other local dignitaries will be present to dedicate the museums five-stamp stamp mill as an official exhibit. This will include the unveiling of an official historic brass plaque by the Native Sons. This large stamp mill likely dates to the late 19th century but first shows p in the historical record in 1920 when it was purchased by Harry Hogart and placed on the current museum property in assisting with the mining operations of the Relief Quartz Mine. The old stamp mill was moved later in the 20th century and was then ....
purchased by the City of Angels Camp and relocated back to the museum property and placed in conjunction with the original quartz mine overshot water wheel to illustrate the consecutive flow of material through the crushing stamps in order to recover the gold from the pulverized quartz ore. The original 5 horse power engine that once powered this stamp mill will be started during the ceremony as well as an operational one-stamp stamp mill.
Refreshments will be served at the ceremony. For more information or questions, please contact Museum Director Craig Hadley at (760) 397-7219 or you can reach him via email at craighadley@aol.com
