Letter to the Editor~by Mike Shevlin

I submitted an e-mail to the Pinetree that was titled Five True Sentences and felt I should reply to this posting. I was asked the following;

Mr Shelvin, a few questions for you.
1. Are the poor always lazy, leeches with no need for government help?
2. Should the unemployed always be considered lazy, leeches with no need for government help?
3. Should our government avoid helping those who cannot help themselves?
4. Is there no obligation by government to require the fortunate to contribute to those in need?
5. Do you really think 50% of the people in this country are not willing to work to better their lives?
You and your statements are a scary joke.

My response...

Again these sentences are “from” Adrian Rogers not me I just found them thought provoking.

Rogers was a Southern Baptist preacher and most of his materials were from sermons that he preached.

Unfortunately he passed in 2005 so you would have had to have asked him these questions along time ago since many were from his sermons in the early 1980s.

Many of our government programs are safety nets for the less fortunate and there are friends and family of mine that are benefiting from these programs and they are neither lazy nor leeches.

Most of our government programs outdate themselves but due to the need for jobs unlike a private business the funding continues and the program continues.

Most will not agree but the Post Office is close to this situation. I now e-mail my customers Starbuck cards because first . . . e-mail is free and second they get them the day I send the thank you cards. So for me the USPS becomes obsolete in this internet world of ours and the government’s solution . . . let’s tax e-mails??? Really?

Then there is the mentality that asks the question why I would not continue to support the Post Office like a good red blooded American. Well . . . I don’t own a buggy whip either but I like seeing the old ones in the museum. It’s time is past. But DC will never admit this or allow this because too many good people will be out of work and apparently that has become their responsibility to create jobs. It used to be private sector’s responsibility.

How about this insanity . . . our government knows that a flat tax would create massive revenue in the treasury. A 5% tax across the board with no deductions no tax credits for big business just make a dollar in the United States and give Uncle Sam a nickel.

But that can’t happen because there goes thousands of jobs at IRS, plus tax accountants, CFOs, tax lawyers (Let’s see what do most of our Senators and Representatives do? Oh yeah they are attorneys) plus all the leech companies that exist so we can understand the new tax laws every year. No more H&R Block . . . so that won’t happen because the fire storm would not get them re-elected.

I am in favor of a society that relies on capitalism rather than government run businesses. I also favor being able to make adult decisions without “mom and dad” in DC telling me what to do. I do not consider myself a tea bagger but I understand their indignation.

There are many examples of our government taking over profitable companies and running them into the ground. UPS and Fedex make a profit but the Post office is struggling . . . why because we have very little need for snail mail? I’m not picking on the Post office it’s not the fault of the USPS employees . . .

Government's mentality is if it's good more must be better. The management groups are strapped with red tape and no one worries about the bottom line so the safety feature for a government failure is the taxpayer . . . always there to bail them out when they screw up . . . now this is passed on to any business that is a major employer with management that cannot make a profit.

Do they go broke like they should in a nation that has always seen businesses close when mismanaged? Nope they get taxpayer bail outs and the top management continue to take multi million dollar bonuses. Sure we can blame the business but the government makes this too easy. If the “easy way out” was gone these businesses would either die or bright new managers would fix the problem or start a new company to handle the business making a profit. That’s the American way . . .

And with everything I am seeing these days including windfall bail outs for the banks, auto makers that fly to DC in private jets with their hands out, the takeover of healthcare and now possibly the real estate mortgage loans with the constant printing of money by the treasury as the solution . . .

So what is the scary joke here?

Maybe it is me???

Did you see the Fresno School Superintendent that is going to do his job for $31,000 a year instead of the $800,000 he was to get over the next three years? There are people in these positions that get it . . . and the message needs to become very clear to the ones that don’t . . .

And the name is spelled Shevlin
We all need to pay attention!!! : )
