JOYCE ANDERSEN – with guest artists ‘SAMBOSSA’ October 23 at Black Bart Playhouse

Murphys, CA...Sunday – October 23rd, 7:00 pm at the Murphys Black Bart Playhouse. Tickets are $15.00 from the Aeolian Harp 209-736-0210 or aeolianharp@att.net On tour from Maine, USA – Joyce Andersen has honed an amazing array of specialties. After nearly 20 years as a fiddle sideman & singer-songwriter playing in rock, bluegrass, country, celtic, jazz and folk ensembles, Joyce Andersen has gone into the woodshed for 2 years to create a new body of music and a new musical standard of what an unaccompanied fiddle troubadour can do...

Her new & 5th CD, titled Swerve, features her new sound in 8 extended improvisational songs that embrace a dizzying range of musical styles, from jazz standards to fiddle tunes, gospel, ballads and blistering rock & roll.
She’s well known in the East Coast music world for her haunting voice, extraordinary violin & guitar work, and for her original songs which have been quoted and re-sung all over the world.
A natural beauty, Joyce is the mother of 2 young boys and the wife of longtime foothill concert favorite, Harvey Reid. We’ve seen them together – but Joyce has been doing a lot of moonlighting with her musical repertoire; she’s coming this time solo – bringing her ‘magic carpet ride’ of effects and hi-tech sound equipment that would make a rock star drool.

Having envied the effects that guitarists have long brought to their sound, Joyce has invented a combination of looping her fiddle (played like a guitar), then layering the sound with more violin and her soul-cradling voice. From Old-Time Blues to contemporary story-telling, to ‘channeling Jimi’ (Hendrix), we’re in for some mesmerizing surprises on October 23.
Not many fiddler/violinists can claim the uncanny ability to play and sing at the same time – but Joyce Andersen has indeed got this talent down to an art. Without using any computerized or pre-recorded sounds, she literally dances with all four limbs as she weaves intricate rhythms, melodies, and harmonies into extraordinarily musical sonic collages. Her new sound is built from a large palette of strummed, plucked and bowed sounds emanating from her violin, viola, Norwegian Hardinger fiddle and foot percussion.
Andersen now commands a staggering wall of sound that is unique, urgent, powerfully diverse, complex, and distinctively her own.

With powerful voice & stage presence at the center, she runs seamlessly through traditional bluegrass songs, anthemic power ballads, Billie Holiday torch songs, and house-rocking reworkings of classics from the likes of Marvin Gaye, Big Mama Thornton, Steppenwolf, Steve Winwood and even Jimi Hendrix.
She’ll be bringing her latest and just-released CD: S W E R V E – as well as her earlier 4 CD’s for sale at the concert.

Opening the evening, and bringing a bit of Brazil to the Sierras will be one of our foothill’s most fascinating and talented groups - “Sambossa” – playing choro Brazilian music, which originated when European dance music mixed with African rhythms. Mercurial & brilliant, choro is characterized by daring improvisation, subtle modulation, highly sophisticated counterpoint, and syncopated Afro-Brazilian rhythms.
Choro became the music of high society in 1870’s Rio de Janeiro – as did Ragtime in the United States, Tango in Argentina, and Habenera in Cuba.
Sambossa features 5 local musicians: David Sackman on 7-string guitar, Lawrence Drummond & Nick Dodge on mandolins, Francine Joy on pandeiro & other percussion, and Gordon Giedt on woodwinds – all drawn together by a mutual love of Good Music.
