This year's award winners: Entrepeneur of the Year: Greg Scott! Scott's Yogurt, and the newly reestablished 49er Motors on Main St. Innovation Award: Sierra Hills Market! These established leaders of Calaveras County were recognized, but the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce is also in the business of developing leaders of tomorrow. The Chamber has brought together Leadership Calaveras for many years...in hope of connecting those members of our community from business, not-for-profit, and other community members who show their dedication to...well...this place.
We are all here building a home, a community, and a future...together!
Leadership Calaveras Class of 2011 were presented with their diplomas:
Paul Mundy, Barbara Sullivan, Nicki Stevens, Madeline Krska, Dean White, Don Stump, Chris Hewitt, Barbara Yook, Jeannie Hayward, Theresa McClung, Ruth Huffman, and Kassie Waters were all honored for their dedication and service to Calaveras County! Leadership Calaveras 2011 took a long time to decide on a project they could lead that would be of the most benefit to our community. After long consideration and deliberation, Leadership Calaveras County decided that our youth, education, and nutrition all met at a single point of service.
"Food for Thought" is aimed at assisting the Resource Connection Food Bank with a program that is already underway at Calaveras High School. Healthy snack bags containing nutritional foods have been given out at Calaveras High School to over 150 students each Friday. This program, begun in May 2011, was met with such a positive response that Leadership Calaveras decided to expand it to Bret Harte High School in Angels Camp.
Statistics who that throughout Calaveras County nutritional needs of students are unmet by existing programs. Studies show that proper nutrition has a causal relationship with school performance, and further studies conclude with simple math: budgeting to make one student more able to perform is possible for only $50 per student per year!
Last night at the Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce annual dinner, Paul Mundy took the lead and worked the crowd with an old fashioned lunch box...before Paul had got half way through the room the dollars overflowed...but this is not enough!
Our children are our future. Please think about kids, meals, and what it would be like today if you were to be asked to complete an algebra test on an empty stomach.
