Leadership Calaveras Class of 2011 Promotes “Food For Thought” Program

(Calaveras County, CA) As part of the course completion guidelines for the Leadership Calaveras Class of 2011, the course participants are required to complete a community based project. The project, named “Food for Thought”, is aimed at assisting The Resource Connection Food Bank with a program that is currently being utilized at Calaveras High School. At present, The Resource Connection Food Bank distributes healthy snack bags containing nutritional foods each Friday to 150 high school students who are in need of nutritional foods over their weekends...

The program, started in May 2011, received a very positive response. Based on the accomplishments of the program, The Resource Connection Food Bank, along with Leadership Class 2011, decided to form a partnership to obtain additional funding in order to continue the program for another year at Calaveras High School and expand the program to benefit additional high school students in our community. It is anticipated that the project will eventually be expanded to additional schools in the county.

Statistics show that throughout the Calaveras High School project the cost to support the project-specific food needs of one high school student for one year is $50.00. The Resource Connection Food Bank and Leadership Calaveras Class 2011 have developed a fundraising plan, which will enable this program to be expanded. The plan asks that during the month of February 2012 shoppers donate a dollar (or more) to the program at the check-out stand of their local grocery stores. The participating grocery stores are Mar Val in Valley Springs, Treats in San Andreas, Payless IGA in Copperopolis, Big Trees Market in Arnold, Save Mart in Angels Camp, Angels Food Market in Altaville, and Sierra Hills Market in Murphys. At the end of the month The Resource Connection Food Bank will collect the monies and use them towards the healthy snack bags for the students.
