Sierra Hills Natural Foods Grand Opening and Chamber of Commerce Mixer in Murphys ~By Patrick Works
Murphys, CA...Something old, something new, and it was some kind of party Thursday afternoon in Murphys! The grand opening of Sierra Hills Natural Foods, the new annex to the Sierra Hills Market, was the place to be as this month's Calaveras County Chamber of Commerce mixer celebrated a new chapter in the long history of the Croshaw family's mercantile ventures in our region...
Mike Croshaw, his daughter Angie, and store manager Stewart Segale were on hand to greet what seemed to be half of the county at their new annex, next door to their existing Sierra Hills Market on Highway 4 in Murphys.
From their origins in Historic Downtown Angels Camp back in 1935 in the building currently occupied by Turner's Wild West, the Croshaw family has a continuous history of providing food to our community for 4 generations. Mike is particularly proud of the new operation in Murphys, as it seems to him to embody a return to the roots his grandfather and father put down all those years ago.
"Marketing to the vegan and organic shoppers is good business, but the thing I think of most is the connection we help make between the community and the sustainable farmers of today. This is just like what my grandfather did, and I think he'd be proud of what we've built here."
Any grocer would be proud of the new facility, one that took Mike, his family, staff, and contractors six weeks to construct. The results are impressive; beautiful from floor to ceiling and chock full of gorgeous produce and a wide array of other natural foods and products of all kinds.
Indeed it was not only a day for celebration and gathering, but a day for shopping as well. Open doors meant busy carts and cash registers ringing into the evening while the party carried on.
While everyone thinks of wines when they think of Murphys, it seems each week there is more news about food than ever before. Calaveras County is quickly becoming a comprehensive culinary destination, in large part due to the efforts of the Croshaw family, and others like them, who provide the raw materials without which no meal would be possible, and who help make so many meals incredible.
Please pull out your favorite recipes, make a shopping list, and drop by Sierra Hills Natural Foods. Your taste buds will thank you later.
