Hovey Shines at National Wine Competition

Murphys, CA ....Tenured Sierra Foothill winemaker, Chuck Hovey, received some great news from Vineyard & Winery Management’s 2012 U.S. National Wine Competition, held April 11 and 12 in Sonoma County. Hovey 2009 Barbera won a double gold and took the sweepstakes as Best Red Wine. More than 1,100 wines were submitted to the competition. Hovey 2009 Zinfandel also took home a silver medal....

“I was so happy to hear that we won a double gold, and then to take Best Red Wine is a real honor,” remarked Hovey. “The Sierra Foothills and Calaveras County all benefit from this. People are turning their heads toward this wine region with these awards.”

Recently Hovey 2009 Tempranillo was honored with a gold medal at the 2011 Tempranillos al Mundo international wine competition held in New York in November. The gold was one of two awarded to wineries in the United States with more than 500 entries from around the world. “We sold out of the 2009 Tempranillo really quickly after that,” he exclaimed. “We plan to release the 2010 Tempranillo in May.”

Hovey Wine is based out of Murphys in the Sierra Foothill appellation in Calaveras County and produced in nearby Jamestown, Tuolumne County. In early May the Hovey Wine Tasting Room will open in the historic Albert Michelson house at 350 Main St. Murphys. “We are so excited to open a tasting venue, as we constantly get asked where people can taste our wines,” he explained. “Our annual production has been increasing over the past several years. In 2011 we produced 1,200 cases and with our tasting room opening, we’ve expanded that to 1,600 cases for 2012. We’ll also be introducing Hovey 2010 Viognier, which will only be available in the tasting room.”

Hovey has been making wine in the Sierra Foothills for more than 30 years and started his first 24-year-tenure at Stevenot Winery. He also is the winemaker for Gianelli Vineyards in Jamestown and is back making wine for the Stevenot brand.

Chuck lives in Murphys with his wife and business partner, Jan, and son, Kyle who is a Junior at Bret Harte High School.
