Hike this: Poppy Paradise...Angels Creek Trail at New Melones Reservoir. ~Calaveras Visitors Bureau Feature
Angels Camp, CA...Hike this: Poppy paradise. Angels Creek Trail at New Melones Reservoir. California Poppies are in full effect right now and one of the best ways to take them all in is by hiking and mountain biking the trails at New Melones Reservoir. One of the locals’ favorite trails for viewing poppies is the 4-mile Angels Creek loop (pictured above). This moderate, single track rolling trail with stunning views of New Melones at every bend follows its way along the side of a hillside. In Spring (right now!) the poppies are endless and the temperatures are perfect....

To get here: From Angels Camp, drive south on CA-49 for 2 miles. Turn right on Whittle Road and proceed to the entry gate (admission for cars $5). Once you enter the recreational area, continue down Whittle Road to the intersection of Angels Creek Access Road and turn right again. Follow the road until it ends at a parking area. You’ll find the trail head here.
