New Melones Fishing Report for May 14th~by Glory Hole Sports

Water Conditions: New Melones Lake is currently holding 1,906,220 acre-feet of water. The lake level is dropped 3 feet this week and is currently at 1044 ft. above sea level and 44 ft. from full. Water temperature is in the low 60s and rising. Lake is slightly stained, with mud lines forming around the shore on windy days....

Winner of the Glory Hole Sports Big Fish of the Week Contest goes to Richard Kowski of Angels Camp. He caught a 3-pound 9-ounce rainbow while trolling a crawler on the main lake.

Trout: The bite slowed down a bit for the bank anglers, and continues to get better for the trolling anglers. The best bite time has been in the early morning of in the late afternoon. Mid-day the fish will be in deeper/cooler water or near shade. Bank anglers should target deeper water near the main lake. Try making a long cast with a slip float rig. Adjust the bobber stop 15-25 feet from the bobber, and fish with nightcrawlers or live minnows. Power Bait has caught some really nice fish this year and will continue to do so. Try Power Eggs with a nightcrawler trailer or rainbow/garlic trout dough. Trolling anglers have been doing better since the trout have moved off of the bank. But the bite is definitely not wide open. We have had reports from several anglers targeting kokanee and catching some nice trout. The shad patterned Apex, have been working well for both species. Night Fishing has been picking up. Drop Power Bait or minnows under a submersible light near the spillway/dam, or under the Highway 49 Stevenot Bridge.

Kokanee: They are starting to school up and become more aggressive, but are still on the small side. Most anglers are picking up 11-14" kokanee along with a couple of trout to fill out their limit. Kokanee that are being caught are 25-60 feet deep in the main lake- the north side of the lake has been very productive. Try using a Rocky Mountain Assassin spinner on one rod, and a Glitterbug Micro Hootchie on the other. This way you will have one presentation that has a lot of vibration, and one presentation that is subtle. Watermelon, silver, and pink have been the most productive color choices for dodgers, and sling blades. Be sure to add scent to your bait. Garlic, Kokanee Special, and anise have been good choices. Don't forget your corn soaked in the same scents.

Bass: wide open! Bass anglers are reporting catching a fish on every cast, and plenty of nice 2 to 3-pound fish. The bass have been in shallow water for the last few weeks, and are starting to move back out to deeper water. Bank anglers have been walking the shoreline catching fish on a variety of soft plastics. It is toward the end of the spawning season and more of a post-spawn bite. They are fattening up and starting to recuperate from the spawn. Try using top water in the mornings and switching to soft plastics as the sun comes up. The jig bite has been good, as well. Remember to practice catch and release! If you do keep a bass, please keep the spotted bass and release the big female (largemouth) black bass during this important time. Glory Hole Sports can teach you the difference, so you can practice good conservation of the species.

Catfish: Picking up, and will only get better with the warm weather. There has been a mud line that forms around the shore line of the lake. This water will be warmer than clear water and is a good place to target catfish. There is a large amount of shad in the lake this year for those large cats to fatten up on. Try using frozen shad or a ball of crawlers fished on a sliding sinker rig. Also catfish feed on smell more than most other fish. Try soaking your bait in Pro Cure, garlic and catfish cocktail are both good scents. There weren't any fish weighed this week for The Glory Hole Sports Big Catfish of the Week Contest.

Crappie: Fishing is good! There have been some nice 2-pounders caught. This is prime time to target the crappie. Use Beetle Spins, Mini Jigs, and minnows in 15-25 feet of water. Target shallow coves, that have rock piles, and scattered wood.

Went to Beardsley Lake on Monday and ended up catching and releasing over 30 rainbows to 17" and 1 brown. We caught them top lining down to 30', in the middle of the lake around the dam using Shasta Tackle Slingblades in blue with their Scorpion pink spinners.

We had a good day on Don Pedro this week landing 8 kings to 16", 2 kokanee and 5 rainbows, rolling shad around the dam and the main lake. The kings were down around 60' and we got the bows from 37' up to 14'

New Melones Lake is getting better every week for the kokanee. We landed several koks around 12" and the last time we went out this week we put some 13 inchers in the boat, the koks are fat, healthy and starting to put up a good fight. The best places I've found to fish this week is the south part of the lake and up around Coyote Creek area using Shasta Tackle Slingblades in blue or chrome, Glitter Bug tear drops in chrome, towing Market Anglers Bite Hoochies in pink. On Mother's Day the water temp went to 72 degrees and we got koks down to 75'. We are also picking up some nice bows that are hitting on the kokanee gear.

Hello,

The bite here in the Mother Lode continues to improve for Kokanee and King Salmon along with some very impressive rainbow trout being landed in the area reservoirs

NEW MELONES , Kokanee are on a very good bite and can be found from Coyote Creek all the way down to the south end of the reservoir. Depth will vary, have been catching kokes from the surface down to 60'. Productive set ups include pink or purple Apex, Shasta Wiggle hoochies, Uncle Larry's spinners and Sockeye Slammers trolled behind either a Vance's dodger or a small Sling Blade. For a scent pattern use garlic, shrimp, vanilla or ginger on your corn, also working well is Pautzke's Fire Corn. Rainbow trout are hitting from 10' to 30' off the spillway and along Glory Hole point.

Flasher-crawler combos, small Ex-Cel or green Glitter Bugs producing impressive trout to three pounds.

LAKE DON PEDRO, good action is also taking place here. The face of the dam, Mexican Gulch, Big Oak Island and into Fleming Back producing Kokanee can be found at 40', spinners, hoochies or Apexes doing the trick in the above mentioned areas. Bows are on a bite in most open water, try running small lures, bugs or Night Crawlers about 10' - 15'. For King salmon working the river channel at depths to 140' resulting in fish to four pounds. Threadfin Shad or Anchovies cured in Pautzke's Fire Brine working well on these frozen baits.

Striper action remains very good! This weeks clients enjoyed catching 7 to 10 fish per day, most in the 3 to 5 lb. class. Early morning to 10 am has been best bite time, but slows down fairly fast after that. The striped bass are holding in the deeper areas of the lake suspended at 25 feet deep. Expect 99 percent males as the spawn season continues. Rolling bait such as shad, anchovies and herring has worked well. As always, we use lots of Pro Cure bait scent to trigger more strikes. Lake water temperatures 70 degrees.

Lake McClure
King salmon bite is starting to turn on! We found good action between the A Frame house and Temperence Bay near the river chanel. The salmon are holding 40 to 80 foot deep. We used rolling Pro Cure injected shad and anchovies. Water temperature is 69 degrees on the surface.

Thank You,
