A Summer Music Festival With a Green Twist!

New York, NY..During the hot summer months, there seems to be no shortage of fairs, farmers markets and festivals to occupy your weekends. You could spend one weekend stocking up on fresh fruits and veggies at your local farmers market and the next weekend at the top of the ferris wheel at the state fair. Whatever your summer weekends have in store for you, there will always be a way to cure your craving for funnel cakes. The Warm Up music festival in New York City takes things to another level....

Every summer the Museum of Modern Art in New York City puts on a music festival featuring experimental live music, sound, performance and DJ's. The Warm Up music series is held in MoMA PS1's courtyard and takes place every Saturday starting in July and running through Sept. 8th. In addition to the festival, MoMA holds a contest for young architects to design a structure to be built in the courtyard where the festival will be held.

Each year, the architects are challenged to develop creative designs for a temporary, outdoor installation at MoMA PS1 that provides shade, seating, and water. The architects must also work within guidelines that address environmental issues, including sustainability and recycling.

This year's winner is from a New York based architect and design firm called HWKN. The winning project, Wendy, opening at MoMA PS1 in Long Island City in late June, is an experiment that tests how far the boundaries of architecture can expand to create ecological and social effect. Wendy is composed of nylon fabric treated with a ground breaking titania nanoparticle spray to neutralize airborne pollutants. During the summer of 2012, Wendy will clean the air to an equivalent of taking 260 cars off the road. The structure will also provide shade for concert goers as well as blasts of cool air, music, water cannons and mists to create social zones throughout the courtyard.

Wendy is built over the walls of the museum and spreads out to the smaller courtyards surrounding the building. It's blue spikes shoot out from the center of the structure to create a monument that is as visually appealing as it is functional.

So, if you're in the New York area this summer and you want to check out this amazing piece of art and enjoy some really great music, make sure you get there before September because after that, Wendy and the Warm Up festival will be gone!
