Local Rotary Clubs Sponsor German, English, Brazil, Italian and Spanish Short-Term Exchange Programs for High-School Students during 2013 Summer

Sonora, CA, - Rotary clubs throughout the Northern San Joaquin Valley and Mother Lode regions began recruiting high school students to participate in a three-week Rotary Short-term Youth Exchange program for summer 2013. Interest is high and spots are filling up. As of today, the following Short-term exchanges remain open. Germany (25); Italy (2); Spain (2); Brazil (4) and England (4). Most applications are due February 28, 2013, with German and Brazil applications due April 15, 2013. The District is also looking for host families to host some of the German students....

To qualify, students must be between the ages of 15-19 and live or attend school in San Joaquin, Stanislaus, Merced, Calaveras, Mariposa, Madera, Southern Sacramento, or Tuolumne counties. Students do not have to have a family member in Rotary to be selected for the program. The program is open to all High School Students. The exchange program is sponsored by Rotary District 5220, which includes over 2,300 members spread across eight counties. The Youth Exchange Program with these countries has been taking place successfully for over thirty years.

The 2013 German exchange takes place from June 29-July 20 in Southern Germany. American students will be placed with a German host family who has a youth of similar age and interests. The American students will have a 4-day tour to the Lake of Constance with a voyage on the Lake and sightseeing in Germany, Austria and Switzerland during their time in Germany. The German students will fly back to the U.S. with the American students for a three-week California exchange, following the Germany trip. The German students will have a 3-day tour to Yosemite Valley during their 3 week stay. This is a chaperoned exchange. The exchanges with England, Brazil, Spain and Italy are not chaperoned and the timing of the exchange is more flexible.

Basic food and lodging expenses are provided by the host families. Students are responsible for airfare, medical insurance, and spending money, which we estimate will run about $1,750. (Given current conditions it is difficult to estimate airfare cost for summer 2013.) There is an administrative fee of $400 per student, usually covered by the sponsoring Rotary Club. The fee allows us to host each foreign exchange student at Yosemite National Park.

Interested students should contact Rotary Presidents in the areas where they live for help through the process.

Please try to get the German application in as soon as possible (due 04/15/13). Please try to get the Italy or Spain application in as soon as possible (due 02/28/13).
