Calaveras Community Foundation Supports Screening of Volunteer Mentors
Angels Camp, CA...The Calaveras Community Foundation is underwriting the cost of fingerprinting incoming volunteer mentors for the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program during the 2012-13 year. The grant of $840 will cover the screening of twelve new volunteers who could be matched with local young people. “We are very grateful for the continuing support of the CCF,” said Kathryn Eustis, Director of Youth Development and Prevention Programs for the Calaveras County Office of Education. “The safety of the children in our program is our first priority.”...
The Mentoring Program uses the most intensive screening process available for its volunteers, including interviews, fingerprinting, personal references, Megan’s law research, DMV and insurance record review, and home visits. The program connects Calaveras County young people in first through twelfth grades with safe, positive, adult role models who offer support, guidance, friendship, and help the youth make healthy life decisions. Once matched, mentors and mentees spend a couple of hours a week together for at least a year doing things they both enjoy—sports, crafts, cooking a meal together, or working on a project. Mentors receive extensive pre-match training and then additional training throughout the year, plus regular monitoring of the friendship, as-needed support, and invitations to group field trips and events.
The Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program has been matching eager local youth with volunteer mentors since 2003. The County Office of Education administers the Mentoring Program, which is funded by grants and donations and supported by the nonprofit Calaveras Mentoring Foundation.
The Mentoring Program offers orientation sessions frequently as a commitment-free way for interested community members to learn more about mentoring. For information about the Calaveras Youth Mentoring Program, please call (209) 736-6078 or visit www.calaverasmentoring.org.
