2012 Frog Jump Champion Honored at Centennial
Angels Camp, CA...In 1928 Angels Camp paved the main street. To celebrate the occasion the citizens held a frog jump competition. This frog jump competition was modeled after the frog jump in the famous short story, "The Celebrated Jumping Frog of Calaveras County", written by Mark Twain. Twain spent a great deal of time in Angels Camp and first heard the jumping frog. There are currently 87 plaques including one commemorating Mark Twain's Dan'l Webster and his jockey Jim Smiley located in front of the Angels Hotel. Residents and visitors are encouraged to view the "Frog Hop of Fame" commemorating our historic and unique jumping frog jubilee frog story at the Angels Hotel that still stands today. The event became known as the Jumping Frog Jubilee...
As part of the Angels Camp Centennial Celebration September 29, the plaque honouring 2012 Champion Laura Kitchell will be unveiled. Laura is part of an elite group of woman who have won the Frog Jump. It is providential perhaps that women had a key in role in the City becoming incorporated and that the 2012 Frog Jump champion is a woman. The unveiling will take place a part of the Centennials opening ceremony. The opening ceremony begins at 11:15 a.m. For more information visit AngelsCampBusiness.com or call 209-736-1333.
