Raymond Fredrick Bird

Murphys, CA...Raymond Fredrick Bird died on February 10, 2013 at his home in Murphys, California. Ray was born in Myrtle Creek Oregon to Owen Bird and Clara Pratt Bird. Ray’s family moved around several time while he was growing up. His places of residence included New Plymouth Idaho, Lebec California, Pamona, California, and Greeley Hill California. He graduated from Mariposa High School in 1966. Ray was married to Lynne Bird in 1990 in South Lake Tahoe. He has lived in Murphys, CA since that time...

Ray was a career firefighter who worked 30 years with the U.S. Forest Service. For most of those 30 years he was the fire captain of the Dorrington Fire Engine. Ray also worked a couple of years for the
California Division of Forestry in fire prior to his Forest Service Career. After retiring from the Forest Service in 1998 Ray went to work at Bear Valley Ski Area and worked another 10 years helping to keep the parking lot clear and the buses running on time. When not working Ray enjoyed fishing, working on
cars, listening to audio books, and working in the yard.

Ray is survived by his wife of twenty one years, Lynne Cross Bird; two sons, Landon Bird of Copperopolis, and Loren Bird of Jamestown; a daughter, Traci Bird of Copperopolis; a daughter in law, Carey Bird of Copperopolis; three grandsons; Jordan Bird, Mack Bird, and Quincy Bird; and two brothers, Michael Bird of Sonora and Calvin Bird, of Thailand. He is also survived by numerous nieces and nephews.

He was preceded in death by a daughter Lisa Bird; his father, Owen Bird; his mother, Clara Bird, his brother, Martin Bird; and three sisters, Lavada Partch, Nancy Thompson, and Joy Rumph.

A celebration of life will be held at the Masonic Hall in Murphy’s California on March 23, 2013 at 1:30 p.m. A pot luck luncheon will immediately follow the service.

I had the very distinct pleasure to work along side Ray Bird at the Dorrington Station. He was a great leader and had a very measured countenance compared to my fiery temperament. I will be away during his celebration of life, but I wish to express my condolences to all of his family and friends.

Bill Schmiett.

P.S. We also used to play cards at lunchtime. After repeatedly losing to Ray and his partner, we decided that cheating was the only way to come close to winning. When accosted by Ray, we confessed our sins, he responded " It took you long enough to figure it out, we've been doing it for years!"

We are so sorry to hear about Ray, our prayers are with the whole family. But Ray's sons were friends with our two boys. Ray had a real kind heart towards young men starting out in the world. He was a gentle giant. Lynn we are so sorry for you loss.

Nancy Strange
