Mark Twain Medical Center adds new PET/CT Service

San Andreas, CA....Mark Twain Medical Center (MTMC) is now offering PET/CT scans on campus, for area residents. “We are very excited to provide advanced technology and much needed services for the community,” said Craig Marks, Hospital President. “Patients needing PET/CT scans will no longer have to travel outside of the county to receive this state-of-the-art technology.” “This technology and accessibility right here on campus is so important for our patients;” remarked MTMC Oncologist Dr. Robert D’Acquisto “Our Cancer Center is an all inclusive treatment center including infusion services for patients that are in need of an antibiotic or blood transfusions. We provide diagnosis, care and treatment for adult blood disorders and cancer disorders.”...

PET/CT scanner is an acronym for Positron Emission Tomography and Computed Axial Tomography, commonly called PET/CT. A PET/ CT are used to diagnose a health condition, as well as for finding out how an existing condition is developing. PET scans are often used to see how effective an ongoing treatment is.

PET scans are commonly used to investigate the following conditions: Cancer, Epilepsy, Alzheimer’s disease, Heart disease, and medical research.

“A PET/CT Scan is a nuclear medicine procedure that incorporates PET and CT technology,” remarked Joel Jaussaud, Director MTMC Diagnostic Imaging Department. “Typically a patient will arrive at the hospital an hour before the procedure is to be performed. They will be given an injection of a radioisotope similar to what a patient would receive for a general nuclear medicine study. The radiopharmaceutical tracer that is injected is designed to seek out malignant cells and attach itself to the tumor. The PET /CT scan machine will visualize this tumor as a dark spot on the electronic image that it produces. As with many imaging tests in a hospital, the patient will be asked not to eat six to eight hours prior to the examination.

The PET scan is sensitive in identifying malignancies one-half centimeter or larger, and will only show the general location of the tumor within the body. The CT component of the PET scanner is designed to specifically identify the exact location of the tumor in relationship to the surrounding structures. Once the CT scan has been completed, the PET component of the procedure is initiated and the two studies are fused together and ready for review by the radiologist.

This marriage between the PET image and CT image allows the radiologist a tremendous advantage in identifying not only the location of the potential
tumor, but the structure and physiology of the affected cells as well.” The radiologist will then dictate a report of what the study reveals. A report will then be generated and sent to the patients ordering physician.

“The PET/CT test is not uncomfortable; there are no loud noises emitted from the machine, and the Technologist will communicate with the patient throughout the procedure, remarked Dr. Bill Griffin, Radiologist and MTMC Chief of Staff. “After the test is over, the patient can go about their business, and expect a call from their personnel physician in a few days following the procedure.” For more information about the PET/CT scan call (209) 754-2594
