Seasonal Opening of Forest Roads Underway

Sonora, Calif. (April 15, 2013)… The Forest Service announced today the Stanislaus National Forest (NF) will open roads seasonally closed. Motor Vehicle Use Maps (MVUM) are available at all Stanislaus NF offices and contain information on type of vehicle use allowed on the roads and motorized trails...

“This has been an exceptionally dry year again with little snow on the ground,” stated Acting Forest Supervisor Tina Welch. “Because of the recent snow fall and continued intermittent spring storms, some roads at the higher elevation on Summit Ranger District will remain closed until they are safe for public travel. It is anticipated these roads should be opened in the next couple of weeks. I encourage forest visitors to contact the district office they are wishing to visit prior to travel to assure the roads are physically open.” The Forest advises caution whenever traveling on the back roads as they have not been maintained and are not plowed. Snow drifts are frequent, take appropriate cautions and come prepared.

Under the MVUM, motor vehicles are allowed only on designated routes and cross country travel is prohibited. “Folks coming to the forest to recreate will know where wheeled motorized travel is allowed, what vehicles are allowed on which roads and trails, and where people can drive wheeled vehicles over the snow,” said Sue Warren, travel management project leader.

Motor Vehicle Use Maps are available at all Forest and Ranger District offices as well as online. All visitors should obtain a map to know where they may travel. Maps and other information can be found on the Forest’s website at www.fs.usda.gov/stanislaus.
