CDR. Jay Edward Quick, Ret. December 11, 1930 – May 21, 2013

Angels Camp, CA....Jay E. Quick of Angels Camp passed away peacefully in Modesto with family by his side on 5/21/13 at the age of 82. He was born in Drexel Hill Pennsylvania on 12/11/30 to May & Guy Quick Sr. He has called Calaveras County his home for the past 35 years. Jay and his “Child Bride” Clayre were married in August 18, 1961. They were happily married for 51 years....

Jay attended the University of South Carolina and studied political science. After graduation, he joined the Navy, and was sent to Italy, to be a boat officer on a command flag ship.

Jay spent a 1.5 years in Italy, then went to air controller school in Illinois and went back to the field for two tours in Korea. He was later selected to attend Navy post-graduate school in Monterey, where he became a Meteorologist.

With his new degree, Jay went to San Juan, Puerto Rico, as a hurricane forecaster. One of his most exciting memories during that time was getting the chance to ride a “hurricane hunter” going right through the middle of a hurricane. From there Jay went to The Armed Forces Staff College in Virginia. He was shipped across the globe again to the Panama Canal Zone as an intelligence officer for 3 years. He also was involved in conflicts including Cuban missile crisis, Cold Wars and the Korean War.

He finished his overseas military career in Vietnam and Cambodia. Over the course of his stay in the Navy, Jay earned numerous medals, including two air medals. He spent most of his time aboard destroyers. He was also served as a weapons officer in Vietnam.

After traveling the world, Jay returned to the States to pursue photography. He worked as a freelance photographer and taught photography classes at Napa Valley College.

Jay and Clayre loved camping in Calaveras County, which prompted their move to the area. In 1978, they purchased a home in Murphys to settle into retired life.

Jay was an active member of the Angels-Murphys Rotary Club. He was also a charter member of the Angels Camp Centennial Rotary Club and more recently an honorary member of the West Calaveras Rotary Club. Jay continued to be an avid weather watcher and reported daily rain totals to the Union Democrat.

Jay loved being with his family, and spending time with his “child bride” who he missed terribly since her passing in February.

He is survived by his daughter, Andrea Jones and son-in-law Charles (Chuck) of Modesto, Granddaughter, Amber Cromwell and her husband Cameron of Hughson, Grandson Brandon Wood, USAF Explosive Ordnance Disposal Technician of Luke AFB, Arizona, Great-Granddaughter Graysen LeeAnn Cromwell and pal Dustin, his devoted poodle. Jay was preceded in death by his child bride, parents and his brother Guy C. Quick Jr.

The Angels Memorial Chapel is honored to be serving the Quick family. Visitation will be held at Angels Memorial Chapel at 1071 S. Main Street, in Angels Camp, CA on Friday May 24, 2013 2:00 PM until 6:00 PM followed by a full honors burial the following day at 9:00 AM at the San Joaquin Valley National Cemetery in Santa Nella, CA.
