1850's Diggins (Miner's Camp)
Columbia, CA... Period demonstrations took place today in historic Columbia, CA (State Park) where women take care of washing clothes, ironing and mending clothes in the re-enactment of an 1850's Miner's Camp.
Theater includes folk singers where minstrels fiddle and banjo their way into your heart. Guitar was uncommon due to it's cumbersome size and the lack of durability where weather was concerned.
Steven Foster was a main composer of the time. Musicians would stay in gold mining camps from 2 to 4 weeks.
The gold camps in the south would lay dormant during hot summer months.
